What year GM 1500 trucks to avoid due to either engine or transmission issues?

I have one and love it but I replaced the lifters and put a range device on mine to keep 8 cylinder on all the time.
Can you add some clarification on this "range device?" I have a 2019 with a recently rebuilt transmission and want to keep it running for as long as possible.

I had a 2014 Sierra and kept it until 200k miles only issue I had was AC condenser had to be replaced
Everyone’s experience is different. I’ve owned a 99 Sierra with a lift kit and 35s in high school, a 2008 Chevy LTZ Silverado, 2014 Sierra, currently have a 2019 Sierra x31. None gave me any engine or transmission issues. All made it 200k plus miles before trade in, except my 2019 which currently has 70k miles but zero issues so far

All of them
We've had two Tahoes (2016 and 2020) with the 5.3 8 bangers that were excellent. They're not European level but were trouble free.

Brother and I both have '17. Both rebuilt 6 speed transmission around 100,000. Ball joints go out about then too. I had broken bolts in the engine that had to be replaced. We both replaced a/c condenser under warranty.
ETA - 6 speed, not 5 speed

Everyone I know that had a 6 speed had issues with it. I heard the 8 speeds are trouble too. The 10 speeds are better but still have issues. I had a 2010 that delveloped a lifter tick at 30,000 miles and never went away. It is ashame they keep messing with the 5.3. Bare bones it is a great little engine.

2015-160K miles. just had to replace transmission

Just got a new transmission in a Sierra. If you don't replace it in time it can ruin other costly components. I have a really good mechanic buddy that drives one and says the transmission thing will happen to all of those year models (2012-2019 or something like that) but that once you get that taken care of its usually a rock solid vehicle. Which admittedly is kind of like saying "she's a great lay if you can get over that she's 250 pounds"

Just replaced the transmission in my 2017 Silverado at 60000 miles. Fortunately largely covered under powertrain warranty.

GM hasn't had a 5 speed transmission in a 1500 since 2007 sport.

Not sure what’s his budget is but you can get a new 1500 2wd LT for 45k right now. If he doesn’t tow he could get the turbo engine for 42k.

I replaced transmission in my '99 Silverado at 125,000
Other than that it's been stellar

I have an 05 Z71 that I bought brand new. Doesn't get driven wvery day anymore but still has 205k miles. I keep waiting for it to quit but it just won't. Still blows cold ac and no major issues.
Damn thing has seen 2 divorces, my 3rd wife and 6 different state license plates have been on that bitch.

I have a 2019 Colorado. It developed a shudder in the 8 speed transmission around 85,000 miles. Took it to a transmission place, they changed out the fluid and it's good as new with 115,000 on it. The transmission guy said I should change fluids again after 50,000 miles.
If I keep it under 70 mph, I will get somewhere between 25 & 28 mpg depending on how hilly the roads are. Pulling a double axle trailer will drop it down to around 16 mpg on the interstate.
**Oops: Update ** I misread the part about GM 1500.

I like to watch Car Wizard videos. He's a mechanic with his own shop in Kansas. The guys seems very knowledgeable and honest..

Wrong. Had an '03 with the 5.3. Had transmission problems when I dumped it.
Wife ( no pics ) had a '15 Yukon. Also, transmission problems. We both have Japanese SUV's, now. Never again will I consider a GM product.

I've got a 2017 and it's had issues out the arse. They moved the plant to Mexico and now they come packed full of that Mexican quality that is so renowned.
Electrical issues out the arse are the primary issue.
ETA: and the transmission leaves much to be desired. The engine really does have plenty of power, but you wouldn't know that from the dragging arse transmission.

Talk him into buying a used Ford with the 6.2l engine. It’s bullet proof, they mainly came in 3/4 Ton trucks but a quick google search supposedly had them in a 2014 F150.
