While I did enter healthcare in part out of a desire to to help people, I absolutely it did not envision working through a pandemic level viral outbreak. And neither did anyone else. I didn’t go to school thinking, “Gee I’m signing up to care for patients during a crazy viral pandemic”. That wasn’t a risk on anybody’s radar that I work with.

I am however, beyond tired of the sanctimonious Karen’s in healthcare. They can’t get enough of this it’s so sick. Fortunately in my experience it seems to be the exception.

As for hazard pay: its already happening in surrounding areas so if it happens I’ll certainly not refuse the check in these uncertain times I have a family to provide for, and the more I can put in savings the better. I’m not too proud to say that.

Not at all.

This board is starved to complain about the growing "hero status" of health care workers since such a large percentage of them are females.

As someone that works in healthcare, this has reached an incredible level of self appreciation. This is literally what we all went to school for. The purpose of our work is to help people. The purpose of our work is to be their in the time of need. That's all this is. We don't deserve increase pay. We don't deserve forgiven student loans. These are the risks we accepted when we went into the field.

Put your head down, do your job.

Sorry for the rant. I'm just sick of the attention grabbing.

This is an incredibly banal opinion.

I think teachers and nurses are in a constant social media war for who can garner the most attention

Absolutely!

It's one thing to respect and appreciate the job they do. It's quite another to conspicuously seek praise and attention for doing that job. A JOB they CHOSE to do and for which they are compensated. It's part of the job duties they willingly accepted to perform by agreeing to take the job. So I while I respect what they do, I'm not showing up to the hospital with bologna sandwiches and poster boards adorned with glitter heaping worship over these "heroes".

Real talk, already looking at continuing education for counseling in dealing with PTSD in doctors/nurses. There's no way to really train someone, outside of maybe throwing them into a hot military zone, in how to deal with what they're seeing in the ICU right now. I feel for those folks.

Unless they're one of those - they do. I mean really, what type of people get upset when others get acknowledged.

I've worked areas hit hard during hurricanes like Katrina.

Ya know what I got for working 24/7 those times? My paycheck and exhaustion.

Ya know what I expected to get out of it? My paycheck and exhaustion.

I understand your response, but the gravity of the current situation has not changed what you went to school for at all. You trained for this whether your actively thought you were doing so at all. You trained to take care of the sick. You trained to step up in time of need. That is the entire premise of medicine. Help the needy. The reason they are there is, in my opinion, actually insignificant.

To put into perspective, the vast majority of hospitals actually have a low census at this point. There are some areas (ICU, step-down units, etc.) that are increasing need, but guess what, these people chose these areas. These nurses, doctors, RTs went to years of schooling to take care of patients. The epidemic doesn't change that.

If your current ICU was completely full with no COVID-19, no one would give a shite and it would be the same amount of work.

Well said, I work at a hospital in the middle of this shite too. I get zero recognition from administration even though I’m an important piece of the overall puzzle. I’m not getting fed everyday and praised on social media. That being said, I have a job and getting a paycheck. That’s good enough for me. The hero worship is getting a tad sickening.

Heck There are about half the staff at many healthcare places getting cut.

Hospitals are empty. Surgeries are trickling.
