After having lost some electronic equipment due to lightning several years back, I've just gotten into the habit of unplugging my expensive electronics, even though I've got a whole-house surge protector as well as plug-in surge protectors for the electronics. Anyone else do the same?

I’ve never seen lightening or heard thunder since I’ve moved in this home, so no.

Every appliance with a computer should be on a surge protector.
Or get a whole home surge protector

I have whole home surge protectors as well as on all electronics. Took a direct strike last year. Fried all electronics and my alarm system. Had over 50k in damage.

A lightening strike isn’t like the proverbial tree falling in the woods - just because you can’t see it; doesn’t mean it won’t frick up stuff.

PS - my whole life I was told to never bathe or shower in a thunderstorm. Recently someone told me it was a BS old wives’ tale. I looked it up and sure enough, there is a chance, albeit small, of an electrical current from lightening traveling into your shower.

Is your whole house surge protector connected before your outdoor home panel?

Lost about 6k worth of electronics last March. Surge protector isn't gonna do shite against lightning. Better then nothing though. Gotta cover everything. Cox coax to modem to network cable likely fried a bunch of my shite.

Nothing at home, but at work a storm in BR a few years ago blew our Cox modem, router and an HP plotter. The plotter worked, but it could no longer communicate online for firmware updates.

I also once lost a bunch of shite from Lightning and since then I have anything important plugged into APC ups power strips. The big brick ones. Added bonus is a few minutes of runtime without power which is helpful in flicker flicker on off on off situations.

Not during bad weather, but when the power goes out I have breakers marked to know which ones to flip in the dark.

Lost too many TVs & Fans bc of the surges and flickering after an outage

Years ago, I defended a contractor who got sued over a lightning strike. The homeowner had recently had a vasectomy. During a thunderstorm, he was holding a refrigerator door handle. When the lightning struck, it went through the home's electrical system, through the fridge handles, into his body, and exited his body at the point of least resistance, which happened to be the unhealed incisions from his vasectomy. Turns out some crackheads had stolen the grounding rods from the house while it was being built.

It probably a lot less likely since the introduction of plumbing using PEX instead of copper pipes
