Just by the author’s writing style, I smell bull excrement, but she may be on to something if you multiply it over the hundreds of thousands of flights UA flies each year. It really comes down to a rounding error.
You are talking about 1,000 less pounds on jet that typically weighs several tons with 100 passengers.
Next thing you know, someone will say let’s physically remove the empty seats on a plane for fuel savings, the airline will then spend double or triple the savings on fuel for the added labor cost of the removal and installation of the seats in the plane. But some egg head in management said it would save the airline some money.
You could also just tell people to pack less crap and lighten the luggage.
I had this happen at work. Someone complained about using and wasting bottled water. So they went ahead and purchased 2 new water coolers and started getting Kentwood water delivery and a boxes of paper cups for water. Running the numbers it was still cheaper to to purchase 40 packs of bottle water at Sam’s.

I don’t disagree with using BMI, but there are a lot of in-shape folks in the “overweight” category. I’m on the edge of healthy and overweight and I’m in great shape. Once you edge over into obese, though…
Maybe use body fat percentage as the measure and use smart scales or body scanners at the airport to impose surcharges on the whales. That also builds embarrassment and public shame into the equation, which there isn’t enough of these days for fatsos.

Sightseeing helicopters charge a 50% surcharge locally if youre over 250.

Luggage is not due to fuel it’s due to the bag guy having to handle your bags different because of the weight.
What does this look like? Genuinely curious.

Weight is weight

That’s why you should pay per weight.
Like when shipping something.

This is exactly how it works when you take a chopper offshore.

Charge by the pound then.
Give space proportionate to pay as well

Like a moth to a flame, the OT’s super athletes come to shite on the BMI metric. Never fails.

How the frick it's ok for a 300lb+ person to pay the same as someone under 200lb, yet 10lb over on your luggage results in fees like that is absolutely ridiculous.
Bc fat shaming and social media backlash.

I’m not a “super athlete” by any means, but the BMI chart has been shown to have some significant drawbacks.

I’m in the health and fitness board running thread with you. You know I’m not in shitty shape. Whatever runs I post on there are about 1/6 of what I do throughout the week, depending on the week, and split between gym, bike, run, and swim.
But for someone that only and exclusively runs or does nothing but endurance work, I can see why one would be convinced that the BMI scales are 100% applicable across the human population. Skinny fat is a thing, even for some endurance athletes.

It may save the airline a ton of $, but it won’t be in fuel savings because takeoff and landings are the only time weight matters.
I don't believe this is correct, the more weight, the more drag, the more drag, the more fuel at cruise.
