“It used to be if you were tall enough to reach the bar you could drink in Louisiana.”
When I was a kid it was when your older brother was tall enough to reach the bar….

They had me and my best friend bartending the big get togethers at 10 years old! They showed us how a jigger of this and...the whole time we are both thinking "ok yeah " and after a few rounds we were pouring it in and having a few and it was so much fun! I was a weekend wino at 11 and for about 7 years after the smell of red wine made me sick, then I liked it all but too many Mardi Gras being in the fetal position. Now I rarely drink but I think I might get a little drunk this time! New Orleans, a bar on every block! I still have friends in their 70s that drink like fish! If God didn't give me a weak liver I would still be drinking? Herb is much better

I’m 51 and we did that when we were 15. I stopped dressing preppy after high school.

Is part of being “old money” letting your 14 year dress up preppy and go crush a handle on Saint Charles?

The old money crowd isn’t standing under a tent on the Avenue. And clutch the pearls, underage drinking at MG. Been going on for probably 75 years. You were probably near Amelia St, across from Superior. That’s the epicenter of white kid underage intoxication ancross all socioeconomic classes.

Right of passage OP.
Got to learn to hold that liquor early.
It’s Mardi Gras. Loosen up.

This trashy behavior doesn't happen north of Alexandria.

Teenage drinking is really bad.

Gotta love the OT. Adults getting tattoos is the “trashiest” thing ever, but parents buying their kids one of the most addictive substances is a-okay.

Friend,
Yours is an astute observation. The primary reason Louisiana is ranked near the last in most standards of life quality is alcohol, the world’s deadliest drug. I can assure you that our family never drank alcohol. For generations, we have led the anti-alcohol movement in New Orleans. The fight continues to this day. I hope you were able to speak to the parents of these wayward youth to encourage them to set straight the path before their children, lest they be caught in alcohol’s ruinous snare.
Yours,

This isn’t as big of deal as you think it is. Not everyone coddles their children to grow up into massive pussies.

Friend,
The deep and complete roll of my eyeballs at this exaggerated and hyperbolic statement allowed me to see the inside of my own brain which, although subjected to copious amounts of alcohol as a child on the mean streets of New Orleans, still seems to be functioning just fine inside of a body that is quite comfortable with its quality of life. There are quite a few deadlier drugs than alcohol and many many more problems needing to be addressed with the wayward youth in our destitute areas of the city. Perhaps you can take a look at governmental corruption and glorification of crime and ignorance before taking pot shots at people enjoying themselves during carnival in the city that care forgot. As you know, the fasting season of lent begins after the festival season culminates in Fat Tuesday. Perhaps instead of counseling people on your misguided beliefs in lifelong abstinence you can explain the benefits of fasting in the name of the Lord.
Yours,
Breesus

Louisiana is a black hole of despair and debauchery.
