This was a huge Facebook fight on katc Facebook page

I read the posts yesterday. Black people were telling white people they should stop eating gumbo and listening to zydeco music if they don't want to change the flag.

When they start referring to themselves correctly as the University of Louisiana AT LAFAYETTE maybe I'll take this seriously..then again, maybe not.

No shite, we’ve established that. The point is that even though the name of the region reflects only the Acadian influence, both the Spanish and Acadians are represented in the flag, but not those of African descent.

Maybe. What might surprise most observers here is how recent all of this official "Acadian pride" really is:

quote:

The word Acadiana reputedly has two origins. Its first recorded appearance dates to the mid-1950s, when a Crowley, Louisiana, newspaper, the Crowley Daily Signal, coined the term in reference to Acadia Parish, Louisiana.[4] However, KATC television in Lafayette independently coined "Acadiana" in the early 1960s, giving it a new, broader meaning, and popularized it throughout south Louisiana.

quote:

In 1971, the Louisiana State Legislature officially recognized twenty-two Louisiana parishes and "other parishes of similar cultural environment" for their "strong French Acadian cultural aspects" (House Concurrent Resolution No. 496, June 6, 1971, authored by Carl W. Bauer of St. Mary Parish), and made The Heart of Acadiana the official name of the region. The public, however, prefers the one-word place name Acadiana to refer to the region.[6] The official term appears on regional maps and highway markers.

And about the flag:

quote:

In 1965, Thomas J. Arceneaux designed a flag for Acadiana.[7] Arceneaux was a professor at University of Southwestern Louisiana, now University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He derived the flag from the university seal. In 1974, the Louisiana legislature officially adopted Arceneaux's design as the official Acadiana flag (House Concurrent Resolution 143, passed 5 July 1974).[8]

Those meddling USL professors!

LINK

So, it was literally 200 years after the Acadians arrived in South Louisiana that we finally got up the nerve to create a flag and some made up region...and now we're SUPER BUTT HURT that another academic has suggested a modest change to those very recent political tokens. This is the OT, so I guess it checks out.

What?
Can you read? It was designated (likely by cynical) political fiat in 1971. It's not like there's some proud history of a border of this "region" over the past 250 years.

And of course, there's this:

quote:

Three of the parishes, St. Charles, St. James, and St. John the Baptist, are considered the River Parishes and made up the area formerly known as the German Coast or les côtes des Allemands, because of settlement by German immigrants in the 18th century. Ascension Parish is sometimes included with the River Parishes.

quote:

The area's name was derived from the large population of German pioneers who were settled along the Mississippi River in 1721 by John Law and the Company of the Indies. When the company folded in 1731, the Germans became independent land owners.[4]

LINK

So, the Germans were in the River Parishes FIRST...and yet the River Parishes are "officially" part of "Acadiana".

Like I said (and is obvious) - it's a made-up "region" as a result of recent local politics. And that's fine...but just don't act like it's blasphemy if someone wants to now have a POLITICAL discussion to consider making the tokens of the made-up region more accurately reflect actual history.

Also, I think there is an argument whether or not it's the Acadian Flag or the Acadiana Flag. There's no argument that an Acadian flag should be changed, if it's a flag to represent a region, rather than a people of a region, that's where it can be debated.

I’m actually 100% sure it does, unless of course the fleur de Lis and castle refer to someplace other than France or Spain.

Maybe they should just create a whole new flag that represents the region and not specific people. That way no one feels left out. Besides the flag gets too crowded trying to represent different groups.

Perhaps you missed the memo, but we are ABSOLUTELY DEDICATED AS IF IT WERE AN A PRIORI FACT OF EXISTENCE to the 1965 made-up flag.

I hope in the future you will consider the divisive nature of your "ideas" prior to submitting them to the group.

Conversation, eh? Beware of this word particularly when used by liberals. What liberals call a “conversation” is usually nothing more than a LECTURE covering their idiotic and misguided beliefs.
