Uber drivers turning on Uber itself?

10 day old article, but never saw it here.

The disagreement is over how Uber's drivers are hired by the company.
Uber considers them contractors: they work when they want, for as long as they want. Drivers must pay for their cars, fuel, maintenance - everything.
The alternative - and the one successfully argued in the case - is that Uber drivers should actually be employees. This could mean a heap of benefits: cars provided, holiday pay, perhaps even health insurance.
On the face of it, that sounds like a better deal for drivers. But is it what they want?

The human spirit is never satisfied. Or is that ego? Or desire?

Typical case brought by some SJW who has never run a business and has no concept how it works.
"Why can't the rich company give everything to the employees? Why do they need to make a profit?"

This. If you don't feel like the money you're making will cover the expenses you're (eventually) going to incur, don't drive for Uber. It's that simple.

What do they need benefits for? Everyone can (or has to) get Obamacare which I've been told will save me $3,000 a year and they even cover my un-needed gyno visits!

You couldn't please some people even if you fricked them with a gold dick.

This is like bums saying they should be employees of the aluminum recycling place.

I am not saying Uber is perfect, but those complaints seem kinda petty. They could easily be worked out, but these are more than likely driven by unions.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with Uber here in Baton Rouge

It's not totally spelled out in this article, but the drivers IMO do have a legit gripe about being classified as independent contractors, because if they were independent contractors, I would imagine that they would be setting their own rates (which they don't), and they would likely not subject themselves to an arbitrary rating system (which they are).

Like many drivers, he took up Uber's offer of a loan to get a new car. That was in October last year, and it already has 80,000 miles on the clock.
The money for the car is deducted automatically from his earnings each week. It's about $1,000 (£655) a month. It's crippling him - so he works more hours, over 12 a day, putting even more strain on the car.
"I would prefer to be an employee with pay and benefits," he said. "And they could help me look after the car."

you have to remember that we live in a society now that believes ANY job, regardless of skill or expertise needed to perform it, should provide a comfortable living.

isn't this the definition of a taxi?
when they do that, they're just another taxi service.

Hell, most taxi drivers aren't even employed by the taxi companies. The car is leased to them.

Just because you're a contractor doesn't mean you can set your own rates.
The day that Uber holds a gun to their drivers head and forces them to work for them is the day that I will give a shite about any employee bitching about their employer.

Recently, Uber offered a special deal for trips that went to the East Bay - the stretch of land east of San Francisco, over the water, that includes major cities such as Oakland and Berkeley.
For a limited time, rides to this area were 25% off. It enraged many drivers for whom a trip from the airport to Berkeley (and perhaps back again) is ordinarily a terrific earner - the difference between an average day and a great one.
so don't take the job while they run this special if its not worth your while. Seems easy enough.
