quote:Exactly. And this shite is spreading to every profession. It's idiotic and greedy to expect a tip beyond the regular bill.
Because I don't want to tip roofers, plumbers, teachers, doctors, mechanics, retail store workers, bank tellers...etc. All of whom "provide a service to help you"

I agree with you and I do concrete. If I give you a quote I don't expect anyone to tip me more than my quoted price so why should I tip someone for doing their job. i have had arguments with friends on some of this stuff and I'm genuinely not a cheap guy, I just don't see why I am expected to tip someone doing their job for a good salary.
We went deep sea fishing last year and to charter the boat was about 1500 on a half day but the guys I was with get bad because they only tipped the guy 200 or 300 bucks. Tipping has gotten out of hand.

Uber used to be great, you'd even get cute girls driving for them.
These days most of the drivers are smelly middle easterners, who can barely speak English. It basically ruins the experience.

Just another reason to use Lyft

Uber really should put the tipping feature in the app. Also, allow the passenger 1 hour after the ride to retract the tip if you received shitty service.

Self driving cars can't get here fast enough.

This. If it isn't part of that app it doesn't change anything..

I used a good amount of Uber and taxis over the weekend in Vegas.
I had at least 3 Uber drivers offer me a bottle of water while I was getting a ride. I never once had a taxi driver offer.
I asked a few times to make a quick stop off while I was in an Uber, never was a problem. Was a super huge problem while in a cab.
Uber drivers were more engaging as far as recommending certain things to do, places to eat, etc. Cab drivers were just plain shitty and super foreign.
Had a few Uber drivers with every possible type of charging device for a phone. No taxi had this.
Only positive about taking a taxi was that there were designated areas, with a plethora of taxis ready to go. In some circumstances with Uber, they would get super confused on where to pick up and I had to go find them.
In all the situations with the Uber going above and beyond, I tipped at least $5, on an $8 ride. I never tipped more than 20% in a taxi, which normally was 2x as expensive as compared to Uber.
TLDR - If $5 breaks your bank, maybe you should walk.

Agree with that. I'm a big tipper in life. To-go orders, counter service... Things some people don't tip on. And it's always hefty. But the entire appeal of Uber for me was no longer having to hit up a bar ATM just to get a ride home. It was cheaper because I always way over-tipped cab drivers.
I prefer to not be expected to tip Uber drivers, but if this is really something they expect, I'd rather it be a part of the app. I'm not getting special cash out for a ride somewhere.

If five dollars in the form of a tip makes your bank, maybe you should get a real job.

In the case of Uber, this is patently false.

Touche. Do you feel the same way about your server at a restaurant where your bill is $20?
$5 over 20 rides, is an extra $100. I asked an Uber driver what his rip was, he said it was 20/80 or 25/75, I can't remember.
Obviously people use Uber because it's cheaper and a tip is not expected. You figure an average ride of $15...$3-$3.75/ride to the driver.
I wouldn't let half the people that post here pay me $3 bucks to ride in a car with me.

Probably in cash, since there's no way to do it in the app.
I haven't clicked the link or read 3 pages, in fact I didn't read past this far in the OP.
But I could have sworn that when you first sign up for Uber and input your card info, there's an option to assign a tip % on each fare. Is that not still the case?

Then allow tips in the app. The company has been all over the media for years blatantly saying they do not accept tips. So of course the consumer is going to listen to that. Now they "allow" tips in the form of cash only, so the company itself is still essentially discouraging tips. If a restaurant only allowed cash tips, many servers wouldn't get paid.
I think it's ridiculous that Uber doesn't pay their drivers minimum wage. But it is also a cushy "side job" for many people where they work literally whenever they feel like it. Hell, Uber even marketed the position that way to people. It doesn't sound like they even want their drivers to use it as their sole source of income.
Not that it makes not paying minimum wage okay. I just think the intended model is being messed with. I imagine there are a lot of factors that go into it. You can say that of a driver's shift doesn't even out to minimum wage with fares, Uber should pay the remainder.. But then there's the fact that they don't have a normal shift. They turn on their phone whenever they feel like it and from there, they can choose not to take any of fares if they want. If someone turns on their app for 3 hours but only takes 2 fares, Uber may see that as taking advantage and basically getting paid for sitting at home.

I'd venture to guess with a 20% share of the fare going to the Uber driver, that most are making more than minimum wage.

People who tip uber drivers regularly are fricking everyone else.
Tip for exceptional service becomes tip for everyone who doesn't suck becomes "it's how they make money" and voila, Uber fricking sucks now.
So, you generous hearted douchebags, try not to ruin one of the main facets of the service for everyone else, please.

Uber was intended as an ease-of-use service premised on no tipping.

You sound like a joy to be around.
Wait, a business changing it's model or being forced to change it's model from the original design?
Pump the brakes! This must be the first time such a travesty has happened.
You're probably fat, you could use the walk.
