I'd rather they just build it into the fair. One of the best parts about Uber is just being able to jump out without even thinking about it.

If someone turns on their app for 3 hours but only takes 2 fares, Uber may see that as taking advantage and basically getting paid for sitting at home.
Except that doesn't work that way. You're only paid with the fares you get.

quote:Yep. That is why in New York Uber really isnt that big of a deal. When I am there for work I just use the cabs. Their cab regulations are so tight there you always can use a credit card and the meter is clearly running and readable in the back seat
They are on their way to being as shifty as cabs.

The driver takes the lion's share, not uber.

But I could have sworn that when you first sign up for Uber and input your card info, there's an option to assign a tip % on each fare. Is that not still the case?
I remember this as well. I downloaded Uber the same weekend I downloaded Lyft, which was when I was in Houston for LSU-Wisconsin.. so it may have been Lyft that did this? But I specifically remember doing that in one of the apps as well.

Uber has a tip option for UberTaxi.
That was the tip amount you entered when you registered.

I am aware. That's what I'm saying. You can't really rally for them to make minimum wage when their pay relies on their fares. If they choose to only take 1 fare in an hour, it isn't Uber's fault they didn't hit minimum wage. Nor is it Uber's fault if there are legitimately no fares to take at that time. The only way to give these people the minimum wage they deserve is by paying them "hourly" if their wages don't hit the minimum wage threshold, but as I said, this could easily be taken advantage of by turning on the app and just not taking fares.

I've never taken a cab in NYC, but if other cab companies would start accepting cards and actually running the meter, they could compete w/ Uber as well.

Nyc has the most efficient cab system in the world, largely because they employ an indentured servitude model.

The "problem" for uber drivers is it is a low skill job, like working fast food. It really isn't the type of job to build a career on.
This bitching and moaning about doesn't change that. Taxi drivers probably enjoyed careers driving because there was an artificial barrier of entry with all the regulations that were in place. When you remove those barriers, you get exactly what these driving services should have always been. Low paid jobs for low skill effort.

This is what the guarantees would do in this situation. That however appears to be a seasonal thing. I think the only way they would do that for the long term is to change how the drivers are classified as workers, and with the recent settlement, that isn't happening anytime soon.

Wait, a business changing it's model or being forced to change it's model from the original design?
Pump the brakes! This must be the first time such a travesty has happened.
You're probably fat, you could use the wal
Everyone look at this guy. Not only does he tip on his luxury UberX rides, but he did it in Vegas.
Private car service in Vegas? Living the dream dude. Jealous.
Plus you're not fat and I am fat? OMG. ALPHA.

Being that the focus of the topic at hand was tipping Uber drivers, I'll take your above response and previous response as a concession to your overall frugality.
If you want to be cheap, be cheap. But don't get bent out of shape when someone offers a different opinion other than yours.
You get what you pay for, fatty.
