As part of the landmark $100 million settlement agreed to last night, Uber says drivers will now be allowed to ask for tips. Which means everyone, even you, will now have to tip their drivers. Forever. Probably in cash, since there's no way to do it in the app.

YOUR RATING AS A RIDER COULD TAKE A SERIOUS HIT IF YOU START STIFFING DRIVERS

What's at stake if you don't tip? Well, your rating as a rider could take a serious hit if you start stiffing drivers. And after a while, you may wonder why no drivers accept your trip requests. The answer should be obvious: because you're a no-tip-giving monster and you don't deserve to go anywhere, so good luck catching the bus, I hear it's going to be crowded for the next 100 years.

Previously, drivers rated riders based on whether they were good passengers or vile, racist, barf people. If you fell in the former group, you likely had a rating somewhere between 4.5 and 5 stars, and have no problems hailing a ride. If you're in the latter category, you may have noticed all but the most desperate drivers declining your requests.

I'd rather they just build it into the fair. One of the best parts about Uber is just being able to jump out without even thinking about it.

Wouldn't this work both ways though? If a driver asks for a tip, the customer could give the driver a low rating, thus making it harder for them to find work.

If this is the case, I wouldn't worry much about it. Few people carry cash on them for this, and if drivers started rated people poorly because of it, they'd have nobody left to pick up.

Congrats. Class action lawyers destroy yet another growing American business. I bet they are smoking cigars in their mansion and laughing their asses off.

I usually try to tip anyway. The cheapness of it makes up for it.

Plus this would work both ways as another poster said. Both parties get rated.

If it's a pretty female uber driver I'll give her more than a tip.

I used to be a huuuuge uber fan. Took them everywhere. It over the past year the quality has gone down. Cab drivers figured things out and became uber drivers so you still get the same shitty service and smelly car. Now this. I have moved to lyft and the quality of the drivers and vehicles is much higher. The Drivers seem happier with lyft too.

I honestly don't see why people on here have such an issue with tipping someone who provides a service to help you.

Part of the convenience of Uber is not tipping.

I don't carry cash--in fact I can count on one hand the amount of times I carried cash over the last six months. Its all credit card transactions for me so I'll switch to Lyft is the Uber drivers start down rating me for not tipping.

Can one see the rating from the driver, before rating the driver?
