. We played football in streets and whiffle ball in mid 70s through hs. Nobody ever got hit but we did collide with some parked cars

not sure about this neighborhood, but in mine people are constantly speeding and running stop signs. the speed limit is 20, and if you are going 20 you can almost stop on a dime. I saw a neighbors dog get smoked last week by someone going at least 40 through the neighborhood. The girl tried but just couldnt stop in time. Had she been going 20 she could have avoided it.

Are there sidewalks in that neighborhood or are people forced to walk in the street?

I went full Karen for a while after they built the middle school a block over. Adults, usually men, would easily go 40+ mph down our street, the same street most kids in our neighborhood used to walk to school.

Had the cops put one of those speed monitors in front of my house where it shows how fast you’re going. Didn’t help at all. Started standing in my front yard and recording the cars speeding past my house, including the shown speed and posting the pics to the neighborhood FB page. It stopped.

Yep. I know I don’t have a built in radar gun but some look to be going 40-50 down my street. I worry about my own kids or dog running out there to get a ball or something without checking as good as they know they should.

It has sidewalks, but you often see young kids driving golf carts in the streets.

What is the speed limit in U-Club?

As an old dad, I now realize how fast 30mph is for most neighborhoods. I've lived in a subdivision where the HOA tries to lower it, and it's a legal PITA. I wish all subdivisions would default to 20mph or less. 30mph in the new, densely populated developments is just way too fast.

The difference is now you have drivers watching videos on their phone as they cruise through the neighborhood. Probably never even saw the kids until it was too late.

I'm pretty sure it is 25mph where the kids were hit.

I'm honestly amazed stuff like this doesn't have more often. U Club has tons of kids riding bikes, scooters, and yes golf carts(that is a different story). Tons of drivers going way too fast and way too distracted by their phones.

A friend of mine lived relatively close to where these kids were hit. He loved the neighborhood(and had young kids at the time) but said it was like the Indy 500 in front of his house. They moved to a different part of the neighborhood at the end of a cul de sac for safety reasons.

Now the golf carts- there seems to be a couple of golf cart accidents involving pre-teen drivers a year. These almost always are the pre-teen drivers fault.

To put this in perspective, this section of Memorial Tower is right by the tennis courts and pool. The sports complex parking lot was being restriped yesterday, so all of the cars normally in that lot were parked along the right side (court side) of the road.

This obviously caused an issue with cars trying to pass each other back and forth. So yes, drivers were distracted, but not necessarily with phones.

Only at night, but every license plate going and coming is logged regardless of time.

Kids are distracted by phones as well these days, oblivious to their surroundings. Another factor, Cars used to be loud which helped as a warning, although noise canceling earbuds would still prevent hearing vehicle. Electric vehicles are TOO quiet, many people will wind up being hit by them. Overall more distractions for drivers & pedestrians alike.

Second hand info, but should be reliable.

1 should be released today.

Other had Impact to head from passenger side mirror and then leg injury from back of vehicle. Not reported to be serious head injury as of now.

Edit; I’ll delete if anyone says I was misinformed

What a complete over-exaggeration. It's not "like the Indy 500". Particularly at the part of the road where the children were hit. That's at the very beginning of Memorial Tower Dr.. So unless you are really gunning it as soon as you turn left from the intersection, you aren't reaching "Indy 500" speeds at that portion.

As others have mentioned, particular circumstances helped bring about yesterday's events. The parking lot for the gym/pool/tennis courts/playground was closed because it was being repainted. Many people who were using those facilities parked along side the road. That area with the playground and pool often has a lot of kids there on a summer afternoon. These kids were crossing the street when they were hit. As a driver, usually you see kids about to cross the street because there are no (or very few) cars parked on the side of the road. The kids can also clearly see the cars coming before they cross. But yesterday the kids (likely) ran out into the road from between two cars. The kids may not have been careful enough to see if traffic was coming and the driver probably didn't see the kids between the cars until they ran out into the road.

Pre-teens driving golf carts with little awareness is a MUCH bigger problem. Pedestrians getting hit isn't and likely would not have happened yesterday but for the unique circumstances

same, i live on a street that is used increasingly as a cut thru and needs another speed bump

It is the olds that are the worst about it. There are roughly 15 kids of varying ages on our block so most parents tend to be looking out as they know there are always kids playing from 5-8ish

The geezers dgaf and plow thru the hood

This is a huge contributing factor to kids getting hit in neighborhoods.

While neighborhood kids were walking down my street to get to school, many parents carpooled to the neighborhood if they lived the next neighborhood over. They would pull over along the sides of our street and either unload kids or park to walk the younger kids to the crosswalk.

So you had cars pulling in and out of spots along the side of our street, hundreds of kids walking down and across the streets and many adults (again, mostly men) driving those same streets to get to work, all at the same time.

In those circumstances, 30 mph is not a reasonable speed to drive down that street and drivers should slow down as needed. They should also be constantly looking for a kid to dart out in between cars. Because they will no matter how much they are warned not to. They are excited to see their friends in the morning and walk together, horse around and toss/kick balls on the way to school.

Really sad I had to go the public shaming route to get adults to drive safely during that time but I did what I did and it worked. Would have loved to hear those conversations when those husbands got home from work. (FYI our neighborhood is 70+% sahm so probably why the men were the biggest problem).
