I guess there are too many LA folks driving around with bad license plates. This state drives me crazy sometimes.
read an article the other day about paper tags in TX, estimated 80% are bogus, used mostly by gangs, drug runners, and illegals

I've literally sold cars with license plates on them and just told the new owners "throw the plates away when you register the vehicle" never thought anything of it.
Good thing none of those people or their relatives/friends used that vehicle to commit a crime with your plate on it. Not that you eventually wouldn't be able to prove you sold it to them, but it would be an unnecessary headache for you for a bit. Not to mention embarrassing if the po po showed up at your place of employment.

yep, you should always take your plates off when selling to an individual

Small city life for the win bro. I know most of the people I sell cars to and my mom teaches the police chief's kids in preschool.
But yeah a complete stranger, I'm taking my plates off.

Louisiana sure is weird. Here in Arkansas you just throw a license plate away when you are done with it. I honestly can't see any valid reason LA would have for fining people over turning in unused license plates.
In LA you can actually cancel the plate/registration online via the DMV's website. Driving to the DMV to turn in the actual plate is for old people who can't work a computer.

On the other hand, I DO wish Arkansas would bring back safety inspections. only do it right and actually get some of the junk of the roads.

I turned in my license plate before cancelling insurance.

If you sold the car, you shouldn't have owed shite. SO, either you lost your paperwork (shame on you) or you're lying.

#9, you need to turn in the plate immediately. You may be able to fill out a "Non-Use Statement" to avoid fees, but I can't remember if the date on the document is the signed date, or if you can enter a different date.

This must be just a Louisiana thing. I has LPs from four previous cars up here and I've never been billed or fined, etc.

I sold my car a week ago and went to the local DMV to do the paperwork for my cousin. I was told by the DMV worker that I do not have to turn in my plate but I would have to "destroy" or not use it since it has been cancelled in the system.

That is the correct way to do it in Louisiana. If not, DMV will fine you $25 and put a hold on you till you pay.

when I moved to Texas, I got Texas plates. Never did anything with the LA plates. Never renewed registration since I no longer needed to. If there are fines for me, I'll just never move back to LA.

30 days. Don't forget.
I lost my license add had to pay $500 in fees for forgetting.
Then had to pay $125 to reinstate license.
Sold a car without taking plate off.

Texas can suspend your license over unpaid tickets in another state. Found ths out last year with a young family we are helping. Went to the DMV to help the dad obtain an Arkansas DL and they would not let him get one because of a failure to appear over an unpaid speeding ticket in Iowa from 3 years before.
It took 8 months to get that straightened out, first he didn't remember where he got the ticket from, and Arkansas couldn't tell him which PD only that it was in Iowa, and then Iowa coudn't even locate the ticket, then finally they found where it was and some little podunk city up there wanted him to come to Iowa and be booked into jail and bond out, at the same amount as a ticket would have been , I was like why not just tell me how much the ticket is and I'll give you a credit card number right now and we'll be done with it? Nope. I finally had to call an attorney and that got it straightened out without having to go to Iowa, but what a joke, people with DUI's get their licenses back with less hassle.

That crap is nothing but a rip off.
We went through this yesterday in Alabama. They can't make you turn in the tag in Alabama but they suspend your registration.
Alabama law for getting a registration reinstated for a vehicle that has been sitting is this. You have to have a letter from a neighbor that states the vehicle has been sitting on your property and has not been driven. Then you have to turn in your tag and they will give you a new one. If you can't get a letter you have to pay a 200.00 cash fine plus fees to get your registration reinstated

LOL Geez, in Arkansas if you are late registering a vehicle, you just sing a little form that promises you hadn't been driving the vehicle since the registration expired and they renew. SImple as that. Not even a penalty. I have no idea what happens if you don't sign the form, because who wouldn't sign the form?

72 hours is the law.
How long has it been for you?

While I agree with your sentiment, the truth is that no mater what your status is in terms of ownership whether you owned it outright or were still financing it, the plate needs to be turned in in order to signify that your vehicle is no longer in your name and that you will no longer be responsible for the insurance.
In a sense it's a money grab for the state. The state, in reality does not want you to turn it in because after a month or two, the 800.00 fine kicks in and the OMV and State Police see a major windfall.....they love it.
If you leave the state and then get rid of the car in another, they love you even more....as do notaries.
Leave Louisiana properly
