While I agree with your sentiment, the truth is that no mater what your status is in terms of ownership whether you owned it outright or were still financing it, the plate needs to be turned in in order to signify that your vehicle is no longer in your name and that you will no longer be responsible for the insurance.

In a sense it's a money grab for the state. The state, in reality does not want you to turn it in because after a month or two, the 800.00 fine kicks in and the OMV and State Police see a major windfall.....they love it.

If you leave the state and then get rid of the car in another, they love you even more....as do notaries.
Leave Louisiana properly

I've seriously never heard anything this crazy in my life. If I have a car that is licensed and insured and I suddenly decide "I'm not gonna drive this car anymore" and just park it in my yard where the hell does the government get the authority to fine me if I don't notify them "oh yeah I'm not driving this car any more and here's the license plate to prove it?"

Pretty absurd that a state would be more worried about fining people for not properly notifying a state that they no longer are insuring or driving a vehicle than they are in fining people who are actually driving around without insurance.

I still have a LA license plate from probably 5 years ago and I've never been alerted of a fine. I've used dmv to get a new true ID license recently also.

We did this with a truck that was tagged in GA. It sat for years before we decided to use it again and we had to pay for all the tag years while the truck sat on our yard not being driven.

At least it isn't an 800.00 fine like in LA. I would be one pissed mofo if I had to write them an 800.00 check for nothing.

That is crazy.

I have 4 or 5 old cars sitting around with no plates on them, maybe one day I'll put them back on the road, I'd be pissed if I essentially got fined for not having them licenses over the years.

Is the fee for buyers or sellers? Like I bought a car used and the owner had a plate on it and said to throw it out, I proceeded to throw it out, do I get hit with a fine or does he get hit with the fine?

I just sold my car to a scrap place in Cali. Canceled the insurance and took the plate off but didn’t even know I needed to turn in my plate. Figured once the VIN changed to a new owner that was that.

We’ll see if the LA boogeyman comes after me?...

If you move back to LA, I believe you only have to show where you registered the vehicle in another state.

If you already canceled the license plate online you're good.

I dropped mine off at the local DMV just in case. When I got to the girl she was kind of surprised and said it's already canceled but we can take it anyways and I gave it to her and that was it.

That does signify that, but you don't have to turn the plate in. You just have to show you sold the vehicle, via Bill of Sale, or copy of signed title. If donated, an Act of Donation is needed.

Did you sell the vehicle, or just stop driving it?

Do you live in Louisiana? I get where you are coming from and in fact agree with you. If you can show the bill of sale, then you have a leg to stand on, but I advise all of my friends that I do Act of Sales for on automobiles to do the easy thing and send the plate in.

Here is the problem . If say, you moved out of Louisiana 10-15 years ago and went to another state with your vehicle, dropped your Louisiana insurance and went with an insurance in another state even if it was with the same company, you would have a problem. However, if you are like me , who moved out of Louisiana in 2002 moved to Tennessee, went with another carrier because they were the better carrier and less expensive, did not think about Louisiana, then later sold the car and then after 2-3 more moves lost the bill of sale, then you come back to Louisiana, you end up paying a fine.

It's a sort of Welcome Back fee you get to pay. It sucks. Even the Insurance Commissioner says it sucks, but it's actually codified law and a significant source of revenue for the State mainly the State Police.

I turned in my plate, then drove directly from the DMV in Baton Rouge to my agent’s office near Florida and Sherwood and cancelled my insurance. All was good.

I covered this a few weeks ago in this thread.

LINK

all you need is the piece of paper showing it is turned in and you do not have to turn it in or destroy it.

I collect them so its interesting seeing how many idiots out there saying they have to be destroyed.
