Anybody have any advice on how to get a dog to jump into the bed of a truck?
I used to pick up my German Shepherd into the back of my truck when he was a pup but now he is 100 pounds. He'll jump half way (front paws on lift gate) but won't go the rest. Ive tried rewards- food- but he just doesn't want to budge. I've even tried to get my other large dog to "show" him how to do it by jumping up in there with me. It's not a problem of being able to jump because he's jumped our 6 ft fence before.

He's already accustomed to the cushy lifestyle you gave him. These damn millennial dogs never do anything for themselves.

Forget the truck. If that dog can “jump” a 6 ft fence you need to sell him to a circus.

Just spitballing here, but what about using stairs to train him? Put something he wants in the back of the truck and have steps that let him walk into the truck. Gradually move the steps back so he has to jump into the truck from the steps. Eventually take the steps out of the equation. And steps don't have to be actual steps, you could probably use something like an ice chest.

He probably feels it's unsafe to ride in the back of the truck.

Our Catahoula has jumped into the car one frickin' time on his own in 8 years. He just stands there with his front paws up waiting for someone to lift his butt into the car like he's Queen Elizabeth.

I try really hard to get him to jump up every time we go somewhere (I was the one that got him to jump the one time), but we're usually in a hurry and my SO just caves in. So there's hope- but I think you need to be patient and persistent!

Make a small wooden step half way.

Get him comfortable going up into the bed. Use a simple term like "UP" and direct towards the truck.

Train him when he's hungry and use normal food as "treats"

Remove the half step after a few days.

Stop giving treats.

Food drive can be a powerful tool. Do not feed him for a day then sit back there encouraging him to come in, showing him the food, saying jump. Try it for awhile but if he does not do it, do not feed him that day. Repeat process until he eventually jumps in. When he does, immediate reward with food and a ton of verbal encouragement. May take a few series of sessions until he gets it. When he does it eventually without the not having fed him thing, give him whatever his favorite thing in the world is and act like he climbed Everest by verbal praise. Profit.

Maybe he would rather ride in the cab and not look like trash

Why not just use treats? I don't see the point in starving a dog when you'll get similar behavior with a treat.

This thread reminds me of my Great Pyrenees learning to jump on the couch. He was about 9 months old and 71lbs before he learned to jump on the couch with any real regularity. He still can't jump on the bed or love seat.

Some dogs are just more athletic than others I would say.

Huge difference in what I’m talking about and starving a dog. I would imagine by the second day he’s jumping in there for the food. A hungry dog will work for you better than a fat cat. I promise you the average person overfeeds their animals on the regular and a day or two of what I’m talking about causes no problems. Food Training works effectively when they are hungry.

Park your truck on the street backed up to your driveway with your tailgate down so that the distance is much shorter.

Stand in the bed of the truck and have someone let him out the house where he gets a running start. As soon as he leaves the house start calling for him. He'll probably jump in.

Try this...open the tailgate and tell him to get in, if he does not, close the tailgate and drive off a little way. Stop and open it and give him the opportunity to jump in. If he doesn't after a few tries, leave his arse at home. Do this a few times and maybe he'll get the picture.

Make sure he associates the truck with positive shite. Try parking on a down slope or some other way to make it easier for him at first. Give him a ton of praise and a treat when he does it.

Use an ice chest or something where the dog can start by getting in the back of the truck easily by just stepping in. Slowly move the ice chest (or whatever) back to where it has to jump. It make take 5 or 6 sessions. But they'll eventually learn to jump. Just keep moving it back or making the object smaller.
