I would start by learning how to live well on $80k

For the amount of work you have to do for 80k, and not having a work-life balance at all whatsoever, it’s not great.

It’s like Engineering all over again after college while your business friends all have fun, making more than you make for the work you put in.

I was just wondering if there are other better career paths out there that would give me a better work-life balance and a social life. I’m not lazy, I’m willing to learn stuff to transition out of that field life. I’m open to new ideas and suggestions.

I also thought all you OT baws bring in 200k and more after 40.

You clearly are either a troll or have no idea how the world works. Even those comp sci folks making 100k+ are working their arse off. You just graduated and are coming across as an entitled and naive idiot.

If you want more money quit drugs, work your arse off and add value.

Find a hands-on job in O&G that pays hourly...maybe not what you went to school for, but overtime really adds up. Check out USCG licensed tankermen (shore tankermen, not boat). I work in the petrochemical industry with these guys. Those guys make like $32-$45 an hour, and typically work alone (no one breathing down their necks). Tough schedule though...24 hrs on-call for 6 days and then off 3 is the norm. I know many that have no college and make well over $100k annually.

You become a licensed tankerman a few different ways...quickest is to find a company that runs a school and hires you as full-time while you train. There's one in Baton Rouge like that. 4 months and $15k tuition later, you're making around $32/hr. If you don't want to pay tuition, you pretty much have to go live on a towboat and work your way up from deckhand over the course of a few years.

This doesnt sound like a money or job problem, this sounds like a jealousy/envy problem. There will always be people making more money than you, "having more fun" than you, having more stuff than you, more attractive than you, smarter than you, etc.

You will never be happy if the only measure of your life satisfaction is how it compares to others.

You dont need a new job or more money. You need to grow up.

Man you sound miserable. Just suck it up and do it for a few years you don't have to be in the field for life. Work hard and network while you are out there and I guarantee you other options will become available in a few years if not sooner.

Or just quit its up to you bruh

How are you only making 80k with those hours and location in West Texas?
is 80k just the per diem + OT?

You're not alone. Working in O&G sales nearly killed my brother. Overwork, mental health problems, substance abuse, etc. He got out and he's way better off for it. Even though he doesn't make nearly as much money, he's much healthier and happier.

but in all seriousness during my graduation ceremony in 2016, which i graduated in electrical engineeering, the PETE graduation class was gigantic... ive always had a concern if the oil companies could handle such an influx of PETE grads, especially since oil prices have been so low

on top of that you have chems and mechs who can do a lot of the same work

The Permian is just being exposed for what it really is. All you shale baws were too quick to laugh at us offshore guys, but now the tables are turning. Enjoy your crow while we gear up to laugh all the way to the bank

Im making almost double that in west Texas with no college degree. Granted I work 28 and 14 in the AC. I hate being away from my family but I can't make this kind of paper anywhere else.

Curious how you think you can jump into something like investment banking when you have zero experience and a petroleum engineering degree

I actually spoke to an investment banker last year who has a Pet Eng degree. They hired him because of industry knowledge and the fact engineers are math guys. He's doing very well. Didn't like being an engineer much.

If I were you I would get into the drilling consulting side of the industry. Work your way up, 14/14 schedule making $300k a year.

had lots of coworkers do this throughout my career in the oil industry.
first you know fluid flow in a porous media so you have environmental. you will take a big pay cut and start in field. but will get into management where pay is ok but you really want to learn ropes and start your own company to eventually make money

another common path is go into financial.you can get all the certifications by after work study
once you are certified past selling buying stocks and at least up into financial planner leave the industry and go to big company like fidelity and work as an analyst while building clients if you get clients money and vp title will follow
last is look at govt jobs .best federal . they use to be usajob.gov but not sure now . tons and tons of opportunities with your science and math background . pay varies from ok to not bad depending on what you really want to do in your heart . but benefits and early retirement opportunities unmatched by any others

night school while wotking and get a MBA .
this will at least allow you to send your resume out to many industries while trying to get out.

good luck
