between this and the other thread, it certainly reads that you just suck at your job and are being passed up by better people and now you are mad
what makes you think you will be able to succeed in these other jobs?

I see a better opportunity elsewhere. I’m still thankful that I have my job. My company laid off a lot of crews recently even in the Permian. You guys must also heard about Pioneer laying off 30% of their workforce last month. Layoffs are happening right now.
Thank you to to those for the helpful recommendations.

Networking and Security might pay a little more, but work from home opportunities rarely exist since you're generally working with physical equipment. Database Administrators make a $#it ton of money but those guys have to know DB management intricately.
Software development has a much higher ceiling than that stuff. Mr. Carl the Network Admin might make more at, say, Otto Candies Offshore, but if you go to a real tech firm the developers are easily making 50% more than those infrastructure guys. At Google or Amazon it could be 300%.
The network, etc. is by definition a cost center and people generating profits will always have better access to the money

You should really reconsider.
It sounds like you are in a bad spot job wise right now, but i wouldn’t go burning bridges career wise. Be open with your employer, give them a chance to move you, and maybe send you back to college.
The big dogs O&G aren’t going anywhere. Luny liberals thinking otherwise are probably going to be in for the shock of their life. The leading O&G companies are just becoming leaner, faster, more innovative, and spreading their investments around. For example: guess who the majority of plastic made in this country, come from?

Get in to the deepwater projects.
Cool work and great technology.
And it is going to be ongoing for quite a long time.

We hired a few of the those senior Pioneer guys. They are doing great. Where are you based out of? Houston, Dallas or Midland?

Your are in a good spot. It takes time and effort in the oil field to make it if you don't know somebody. Shut up put in the work and opportunities will come. All these ops managers were at one time in the field. You got to start somewhere.
Get certifications, learn new shite. Its only your fault if you stuck in a rut. The work is there.

The industry will never be what it was like before 2014.
that industry, like a lot of others is cyclical, stop your bitch arse whining and get innovative, after the oil field bust in the early 80s a lot a energy related companies jumped on the "green" band wagon and became environmental cleanup specialists, they had been trashing the environment for years but were able to parlay their knowledge of having been in the o & g bidness into a burgeoning new niche market and make bank, one door closes, another one opens...

The oil boom several years ago was the exception.
Booms are not the norm. But booms will always happen. If you are positioned right, you can clean up in a boom. Like gambling, the key is knowing when to quit. A lot of people double down at the end of a boom.
Shale wells are short cycle. If drilling slowed today on the Permian, there will be an oil shock in six months. Watch for a decline in permits, and get ready. It probably will not be a long boom, but it will happen. I personally think these “boomlets” are going to be the new US norm.
Also consider overseas. Your shale skills in Nowhere, New Mexico will work in any other country that starts shale drilling. And that will happen.

Dude, cry me a River. There are a bunch of oilfield service companies out there who would love to hire a PE for a design or sales job ie, Baker Hughes, Slumberge, Weir, etc. These are good jobs, pay well and you will be interacting with the drilling companies. They may hire you for a PE job if you do a good job for them. You are actually in a good position.
