I almost feel like we so over alorithming and AI'ing ourselves into coming full circle back to where those with an ability and willingness to actually engage in in person interaction (which, for better or worse, will often come down to a 'who you know' type level), is going to be the optimal if not only way to get anywhere professionally anymore.

A few years ago my sister lived with us and went job hunting. I literally drove her around town to walk into places with "hiring" signs up- they ALL told her to apply online.

That's anecdotal, but it happened.

If that were true, it wouldn’t take hundreds of applications to receive an offer.

Not to mention, jobs report interviewing 40% more applicants per position compared to 5 years ago.

The number of applicants has ballooned while the number of jobs has not.

The guy in the video mentions this. He said they penalize applicants for using AI to write their resumes, but the corporations use AI to filter the resumes. AI for me but not for thee.

this ain't exactly an apples to apples comparison

One is using AI to sort through submissions while the other is using AI to misrepresent their experience, writing abilities...essentially all the things that portray their skills. It's not that person applying, it's the AI applying. If you can't put your resume together and write a genuine cover letter I wouldn't hire you either.

Eh…yes and no.

Certain industries, such as service, retail, etc., absolutely.

Generally anything that is corporate, requires a college degree, etc., it’s all online.

Larger industries/corporations don’t even use humans any more to filter out applicants.

It starts with AI and then moves to a person.

It doesn't even take the in person part to stand out anymore. A follow-up phone call or thank you email after an interview is more effort than most.

That kind of effort ban be the tie-breaker if deciding between candidates.

I work for a giant corporation and the applicants apply to certain departments after they have passed the tests. All the applicants that passed the tests have their resumes sent to the department they chose. We have a team of 4 to 6 people go through every single one. 2 months ago I personally went through over 300. You can discard many in 5 seconds because they are woefully unqualified. I don’t doubt what you are saying but some places still lay eyes on 1000’s of resumes.

Plus, we’re under cutting American workers by hiring foreigners for cheaper. Hopefully the 100 K fee helps in that regards.

Just curious, but what does this mean?

I know.

I was simply pointing out that a lot of corporations went to an AI filtering system prior to it getting to a human.

It is why the “just hand them your resume” doesn’t work like it used to.

It's rough out there. I left woke-arse Ochsner in January and just got my new gig last week. I only put in about 50 applications during that time period though. If they're doing a thousand, they're doing it wrong.

Eh……….
I can tell you in my line of work you ain’t gettin shite in person unless someone knows you or looks for you specifically. In fact most of the time you get the “let me know when you apply so I can flag your application for human review.” By that time though the application process is a formality and you’re more or less already hired.

LOOKING for a job, unless someone is looking specifically for you, sucks and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Basic skills tests. Math, science, spatial acuity etc. you would be surprised how many “smart” people bomb that last part.

I should say plenty of jobs available but just not in a job a lot of people want

50 years ago if you are unemployed you take what you can get

Now people are picky

It ain’t what you know, it’s who you know. Relationships matter, and not the ones with a smartphone, but a human.

I've been looking for 4+ months...15+ years experience in my field. Wrote my resume and AI help me hone it but my words...had other humans check it out even...have applied like crazy...can't even get an interview these days...when I do it's for very low pay and they pass on me because I'm overqualified. I'm almost 40.

I work in supply chain/procurement and operations. It's a blood bath.

Companies want unicorns. They want my skill level but pay like I'm a recent college graduate or they want an entry level person but they want 5+ years experience. None of it makes sense anymore.
