U.S.-based company 3M said Friday that it has been asked not to supply N95 respirators to Canada amid the coronavirus pandemic.

U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered Minnesota-based company to produce and sell as many medical-grade masks as the Federal Emergency Management Agency says it needs. He invoked the Defence Production Act in order to speed up the distribution of masks.

“The Administration also requested that 3M cease exporting respirators that we currently manufacture in the United States to the Canadian and Latin American markets,” a statement from the company read.

I would respectfully tell Trump to frick off. I'm sure he'd say the same if he were still just a business man.

#1. Political posts belong on the Political Board
#2. It's believed that 3M was selling to other countries who were offering cash instead of to American companies first. I'm all about Capitalism, but take care of your own first.

From the same article

quote:

The statement (from 3M) also warned that limiting supply to other countries could lead to them “retaliating” with similar measures.

“If that were to occur, the net number of respirators being made available to the United States would actually decrease. That is the opposite of what we and the administration, on behalf of the American people, both seek,” the company said.

Canada and Latin America would tell us to frick off in a heartbeat. I have 0 remorse here for Canada. I'm not for fricking them and don't feel 100% at ease here, but sometimes you gotta put yourself first.

Did he say never sell them outside the US or was it "take care of the US FIRST then you can sell elsewhere"?

Considering most of the companies that make N95 masks make them overseas... Probably not smart to cut of our supply

These respirators are being shipped out of country, they're being shipped IN.....

quote:

In a statement, Minnesota-based 3M said most of the masks it made at its factory in Shanghai had been sold within China

quote:

the Administration requested that 3M increase the amount of respirators we currently import from our overseas operations into the U.S.

We've already gotten bad supplies of them from China, I'm not sure we want cheap masks made in Peru or thailand at this point anyway do we?

Yesterday, they all admitted in the presser every state was bidding against themselves as well as Internationally. Trump said something to the effect that states weren't prepared and should've bought when there wasn't a bidding war. Before a Pandemic. "That's just the way it works..." he said.

I don't understand this logic. Either you are all about Capitalism and the theories which make it work, or you are not and instead favor government intervention when requested/necessary.

Capitalism does not care about taking care of your own first, when your own is defined in political terms.

Is it wrong? And you can call Obama and Bush idiots too for never being prepared.

The blame Trump for everything campaign is pretty pathetic given the infinite number of variables involved in this.

So once again, a half measure when he could actually use the powers that he has if he wanted to.
