2012 Silverado with the 4.6L v6.

123k miles with no issues. It is a bit underpowered especially going over steep bridges but not too bad. Wish I had the v8 but oh well. Next time I will definitely get the v8.

Honestly one of the biggest things they have going is the reliability reputation of the LS motors.

Until they put in AFM. Before then the only problems were piston slap and water pumps. AFM alone would keep me away from any new GM truck V8.

I thought the Ford 6 cylinder was supposed to get far better gas mileage than 20.3 mpg.

I think the best they publish for the supercrew is like 20 city/26 hwy. Fact is, if you average above 20, you are doing better than any other truck in that size. I'm not talking about "this one time we took a road trip that was 99% interstate and I checked my computer and we got 22 mpg". I have 13 fill ups driving all over in Houston and average 22 mpg actually calculating at the pump. That is every mile I've driven, including pretty regular gridlock traffic.

Friends with similar drives get significantly less. I asked around before purchasing. Guy I know with non-EcoBoost Ford gets 17ish. Guy I know with a Tundra gets 13ish. When I had my Chevy, I averaged around 19, but the commute was much more highway.

Now the computer in my truck is WAYYYY off. It says I'm getting 24 mpg. It kind of annoys me that it can be that wrong. Wish it was right though.

355HP and 383 ft/lbs. Not far off from you. Most people wouldn't notice that difference pulling.

No. The chevy/GM 5.3 can get over 20 pretty easily if driven by someone who is driving normal. I average a little over 20 and I am 50/50 city. That is a true over 20 not based off my computer. My computer actually says I get 19.8mpg. When calculated at the pump I am between 20.3 and 20.5mpg almost every time with my 5.3 Chevy.

You are an exception if you're not lying.

I have the dreaded eco boost in an FX4. Don”t love it or hate it. If I had it to do all over again, I’d probably get a V8 but I would not disparage anyone with the 6 or discourage from buying it.

I’ve had no real issues at all and it has plenty of power for what I use it for. Sorry for the otherwise non comical answer.

Hey now, my 4 cylinders are doing their best.

I now drive a Silverado with the 4.8 V-8 in it and it's nice to have that power when needed, but I did just fine when I had my old 95 Ford Ranger with the 4 cylinder with 5 speed manual transmission.

I never had a need to tow anything but did carry a lot of building material in that little Ford for years. Only real issue I had with the Ranger was carrying sheet goods since they had to be put in over the wheel wells and on top of the tailgate since there wasn't 4 ft. clearance between the wells. That is a nice advantage with the full size Chevy I now own.

I sure miss the gas mileage of that Ranger though. I'm lucky to hit 20 with my Silverado where the Ranger was getting upper 20's all the time.

A good as V-8's have gotten with fuel efficiency (8+ speed transmissions help), I just don't know that a boosted or normally aspirated 6 is that big of advantage.

I like the inherent balance and proven longevity of V-8, and they always sound good.

If they had a way for me to prove it I would. I can honestly say I am not BSing.

If that 5.3 has AFM, I can see that it could do that.

That seems better than I would've thought, given you are 50% city driving. I would imagine, you aren't in a ton of stop and go traffic, though.

Again, you'd be the exception. Your truck is rated around 16 city and 22 highway. You say you do 50/50 so you'd be at 19 right there. You claimed it's easy for someone to average over 20 with these trucks, and the numbers just don't agree with that.

I agree 100%. My Tacoma is a friggin' dog. 1st gear is too short and 6th gear isn't much better than 5th.

My taco has a six-cylinder. It works fine for me. I could see how it wouldn't be enough for people who do a lot of towing. I typically only load up the bed with a few hundred pounds of glass.

I had a '91 S10 Blazer with that 4.3 liter V6, which was basically the Chevy 350 with 2 cylinders cut off. That thing screamed....

Toyota has a 4.6L V8 for it’s base Tundra. Bet that would be great in a Tacoma.

I have a '15 Silverado with that 5.3. Just back from a Houston road trip, got a little over 23mpg...

I had a 1999 F150 with the 4.2 V6 and that thing was a slug. Struggled to reach 75 and accelerated lazily.

I love the turbo sound. But prefer v8 in trucks.
