This trend is called "Restorative Justice" in the Progressive circles.

It is one more thing that the liberals are doing to try to upset our way of life.

They have been getting their people elected to District Attorney jobs around the country based on this ideology. Look at Dallas, Baltimore and other locales. It will continue until people get fed up with being robbed, beaten and otherwise violated by repeat offenders. Then the pendulum will swing back.

We are way at the left end of the pendulum swing now (I hope) and I can't wait for it to return to the other end.

Everyone, with the exception of thieves, hates a thief.

Thievery should be aggressively prosecuted.

Criminal justice reform has been hijacked by leftist nuts.

"If we just remove the consequences we can't consider it crime!!"

Drug prosecutions should be reformed in favor of extremely harsh prosecutions for thefts over $500 and any violent crimes.

Even if the theft is not a crime that would be prosecuted, burglary still is

I agree with you chin, as a lawyer, what would be your speculation be on how this might effect the "stand your ground" type laws, say a homeowner walks in on the perp who has just bagged up $750 of loot, the homeowner is startled, thinks maybe the unsub has a gat and busts a cap in his arse and kills him, as it stands, in some states, homeowner is justified in his actions but perp wasn't committing a crime(at least a prosecutable one?)

We had an interesting case locally on this issue. Black male is on a white male's carport, vandalizing the white male's car. White male comes out with a gun, black male takes off (it was an older black male too, not some young guy). White male shoots and kills the black male as the black male is leaving the scene.

Case went to a jury - not guilty. Surprisingly, there was not a lot of local blowback from the black community here (which is a high percentage of our population). I think country folks don't like the idea of some thief or vandal coming onto there property and stealing/damaging their stuff.

yeah, I thought about that being the real charge, was trying to think up a scenario where theft and stand your ground might intersect, I suppose it's possible?

But those citizens defending their lives an property will get an extended stay in Angola (if in LA I guess).

Why allow folks to steal/commit crime without repercussion? Is it to continually grow the police state by creating a bigger problem for bigger government to solve? IDK I'm asking and trying to figure it out.

I will never ever understand the mindset of tolerating theft. In my opinion, there are 3 groups of crimes which should be met with instant death:
1. murder
2. rape
3. theft/burglary (including elected officials stealing from the taxpayers)

If I was a crazy dictator, there would be no appeals after conviction for any of these crimes. You die within 15 minutes from sentencing. If we kill a few innocents with the guilty, so be it. Let the prosecutors live with that on their conscience. In countries where they slice the hands off of petty thieves, there are a LOT fewer thieves.

Maybe someone comes up to you on the street to steal less than $750 from you but there is no reasonable fear that you will be hurt/killed and you shoot them anyway?

Thomas Sowell does a great job explaining it. It increases the cost of living in ghetto areas because it drives businesses that are willing to take on the risk of conducting business in the ghetto out of the area. Grocery prices increase, insurance costs increase, poor people who don't break the law leave etc...

Spot on. Just wait and see these prosecutors proclaim that crime rates have dropped when the run for re-election. Well of course they will drop when you decriminalize theft! SMH

Correct, but you can't think of any way that putting cash in a bank account could cause you to pay taxes that you wouldn't otherwise pay had you kept the money at home?

Are you talking about paying taxes on the interest earned?

Do people actually avoid saving and investing so they don't have to pay taxes on money earned?

For the lawyers on here. Someone steals $548 dollars from me. It is on video, and 4 of my neighbors who know the thief saw him and identified him.

The local DA decides not to prosecute because of the $750 limit they have set. Have my civil rights been violated? What rights do I, as a victim, have? Can I sue this prosecutor and win?

What are my avenues when a public servant refuses to do their job?

I've a friend that does, she makes so much money at this point, she doesn't even care, the cash she stashes in her house is used for gambling money, anything she wins goes back into the stash
