Everyone around you should have noise cancelling headphones. My kids are older now, but I always understand the plight of parents traveling with toddlers. frick the childless haters. You are providing the next generation of American prosperity at a great expense to yourself and they are intent on drawing down every last bit of their own value onto themselves.
Sure, that’s a harsh generalization, but to anyone who so much as gives you the stink eye - frick ‘em/

Bring multiple small toys for the kids to play with and only give one toy at a time to play with. Remember they lose interest in something pretty quick hence the one at a time approach.
Bring a fresh stack of the small posted notes and let them have it to play with. It works

A roll of painters tape. Tear off little pieces for them to stick on things. It helps kill time. One of the little tackle box snack packs full of snacks, pouches of apple sauce and the like also. Give them Motrin 30min before the flight starts to help with ear pressure if they're prone to it. Know that some people will look at you with some disdain, but frick them. They're usually idiot twenty something's or batshit single cat women. Try to relax if shite goes south.

Buy a bunch of ear plugs and offer them to anyone sitting around you.. We did this 14 years ago on a flight from Houston to Mauii.. It was greatly appreciated by all.

This seems like solid advice.. i always bring my own earplugs and eye mask (and earphones) - but for those who may not have brought their own, the parents of a child who may go crazy with a tantrum or three during the flight, handing out earplugs is a helpful gesture that shows consideration for those around you .

If you’re sitting in the plebeian class, expect screaming babies. End of story.

Try to be as patient as you can. Good luck!

One thing i am sure of- if you are flying commercial, whether business class or anything else, and not flying private- then you too are a plebeian like the rest of us , full stop .

I have become what I always hated when I traveled a ton. That family. I hope to do my best not to impact the travel experience of others.
My advice is to not worry about this too much

Sometimes kids have issues with their ears not popping when flying and that can cause them pain. The flight attendants will know what to do to help, so let them know if that becomes an issue.
Read up on it before boarding the plane since there are several things that may help if it becomes an issue.

I know from personal experience that Delta will not allow you to move to an empty seat if you’re seated next to a crying kid if the kid is yours.

Melatonin or Benedryl
do the other passengers a huge favor (don’t be that guy that disrupts the entire flight for everyone).

Correct answer. The eustachian tube allows pressure from our inner ears to be released into the back of the throat. When you nold your nose and pop the pressure out of your ears, you're using this tube.
Unfortunately, with babies and toddlers this tube has not formed a connention between the ear and throat yet. It only develops later around ages 7 - 10. So the pressure that builds in their ears in a pressurized aircraft cabin cannot be released until you land again. Thus the pain and anxiety.
To alleviate this somewhat, try massaging their ears, especially the back of the ear. It doesn't solve the issue completely but will help. And the child sees that you're doing something, so that will help with the anxiety.
You may also try rubbing the ears of the passangers around you, but the last time I did that I got banned from that airline.

Plenty of snacks and a fully charged iPad with a selection of their favorite shows downloaded.
