Got ya, I played league legion ball in middle school. Parents knew high school ball was my ceiling so sent me to a magnet school to get a good education, which meant no traditional sports. All the kids I played with went to Catholic where only 2 or 3 actually made the team.

We can talk about Centenary having 50 baseball players including some that didn't play high school baseball, but this is an example of how D3 is working now.

Is this true? Wow. How does that happen? Is it kids who were not able to make their HS team, but because Centenary needed players they take them?

That's funny, they watched you play and said frick this...he should learn math!

My parents didn't watch me play, didn't send me to a magnet school, taught me math themselves....and I quit sports on my own.

I just have trouble buying that these kids love playing baseball that much. I have a 13 year old, 8 year old and a toddler. I never see the older kids' friends talking about baseball, playing baseball in the backyard, watching or even knowing much about MLB players or anything like that. Yet, several play for travel ball all year and always sport their flatbill hat and baseball necklace.

It's all about the parents and what the parents want and nobody's going to convince me otherwise. If they say the kid wants to do it and loves it, it may be because their friends do it. But, they're all afraid to tell humorless Daddy Baw, who also has a flatbill with sunglasses upside down on the bill and a baseball necklace. no.

Can’t wait until he’s old enough to start running and doing push-ups and shite.. the wife (ex all conference softball player @ Arizona) wants him to do long toss drills but at only 4 years old I don’t think he’s quite ready for that yet, we’ll see what his pediatrician says after we get his elbow checked out (been a little swollen the past few days but he’s working through it)

You are on the right track. Get him on a travel cosches pitch team as soon as you can so he can face the best.

I think for a lot of these kids, travel ball is all the kid knows. Of course they are going to "like it" when they have never been exposed to anything else. And with the committment required for a lot of these travel ball teams... they won't get to experience anything else.

And FWIW... competitive dance is getting like this as well, and my wife (no pics) and I have had a lot of heated discussions about this. And dance, for us, is only two nights a week for 90 minutes each night, and nothing on weekends until the spring.

Its not a need for their baseball program. Its a need for students at the college. Most Division III programs are basically told to take anyone that wants to play, because they have to pay tuition, room and board, etc.

Again, here is their roster: LINK

Take a look at Tim Veducci - no high school baseball experience: LINK

They have 25 freshmen and only five sophomores. What happens is they all go in, pay expensive tuition, slay pussy for a year as a college baseball player and most of them aren't good enough, so they don't come back for a second year. And a new crop of freshmen with dreams of being a college baseball player comes in.

Like I said, there is huge emphasis on baseball and softball because the parents have it bad in those sports. Many of them spent tons of money over the years to have their kids play college sports and that dream isn't happening for D1 or even D2 - D3 gives them their signing day, their facebook photo album, and their bragging that Johnny is playing college baseball. But in reality, its just another four years of pay for play.

Its bad in football as well. Look at Louisiana College's football roster: LINK

Numbers 1-99 taken and 50 more without a number, for a team that went 3-7 last year.

maybe for some kids...however my son is 14, he plays baseball, soccer, football, he hunts and fishes with me....he plays the guitar and piano, has an A/B student..he'll be a freshman this year and will probably just stick to soccer, baseball, hunting and fishing going forward

He knows damn good and well that he can quit playing any sport or activity he wants anytime he wants

A lot of these private D3 schools have a reputation of "Pay Your Fees, Get Your B's" but I did not realize that extended to sports teams as well.

Its a relatively new thing - popped up in the last 10 years or so. You see schools like Centenary and Rhodes with lacrosse teams when there are about 20 high schools in the entire South with lacrosse teams.

Men's and women's lacrosse - that's 40-50 students and low overhead because they can play on the football field with some extra lines.

There are programs that put more emphasis on quality than quantity. But, at the end of the day, it is very unlikely that an athlete with any experience is going to be turned down. They may never see the field, but they will be on the team, and that's what matters.

As long as they get to wear the shirt, right?

Crazy.

What always gets me at least on the high school level is that a lot of these travel ball kids get to HS but get shut down when some of the poorer kids who played rec league but are natural athletes come in and blow them away.

Sounds like you are living my life. The financial commitment is way out of line for something that is very much extra - curricular. I shell out about 500.00 a year for football and for my older daughter about 250.00 for basketball .....a year, not a month, not a weekend

Talk to a friend this morning, who's kid is playing in a World Series in Gulfport. 9-U. Kid has two games tonight... 530 and 815 pm. Then, the 9-U World Series is over.

Why?

Because only three teams signed up to play in the 9-U world series.

So each team is playing the other two teams today. If one team wins both games, they are the World Series Champion (and I guess get the rings). If the teams are tied, they will use some tiebreakers to determine the champion.

However, this World Series guarantees 5 games.

So starting Thursday, they will also play in the 10-U World Series, and the 2 games they play today will count as their pool play games in the 10-U tournament. The three teams will get the last three seeds in the 10-U bracket

The three teams... two are from South LA and one from Alabama.

Can you tell your friend that tigerdroppings wishes his son the best this weekend and hope they have a great time? Thanks.

Travel sports used to separate the average kids from the elite kids. You had to travel because that was the only way to face better competition. Now all the teams travel around playing each other. It's just a bunch of average teams with average players playing "travel ball." It's a money-making scheme. Parents are dumb enough to do it so the joke is on them.

There is a World Series every week from now through August in Orange Beach. Each week a team will win a World Series.

They should have a Super World Series of World Series winners in August and get rings and a chain to make it special and meaningful.
