Towing with Nissan Pathfinder

My daughter (no photos) and son-in-law want to buy a Nissan Pathfinder and intend to tow a 6000 pound toy (boat + trailer weight). I told her that they are nuts mainly because it has a CV transmission in it. She says the Pathfinder is towing rated at 6000 pounds. I explained to her that her “toy” is 6000 pounds Dry. Once you load it down with fuel and other equipment you will be Significantly above that “rated towing capacity number”. I also told her that I would not tow anything with a vehicle that has a CV transmission. Right now they are towing with a 4 Runner but claim that it feels like the boat/trailer is driving the vehicle instead of the other way around. (Which I completely understand). Any recommendations n alternatives that would be more applicable to her intentioned use. I recommended a used Tundra with the bullet proof 5.7L V8. What say y’all?

How far are they towing usually? Flat terrain?

For 6k lbs they will need at least a 1 ton dually, probably in F450 territory.

1. The 2021+ Pathfinders DO NOT have a CVT transmission

No way is this safe. That's very heavy.

Yeah, PR can’t stop half that weight. My 24’ bayboat is all over want behind my f150 on flat ground.

The pathfinder is no longer a cvt?
The motor and transmission isn't the issue.
The soft suspension and p metric tires are the problem.
If this were an Xterra or frontier, I'd tow it without thinking.
Edit, a new armada will tow that effortlessly.
Or...they could beef up the suspension on the 4runner and put properly weight rated tires on it

They’re overweight now with the 4Runner and it’ll be no better with a Pathfinder.

Some of the new wakeboarding boats weigh more than that and cost 200k+.
So then you need a 60k truck to tow it.

Yep. My dad’s F150 struggles to pull their 25’ surf boat. He really needs a 250 for it.

Can't be beat for longevity. If they are just determined to have an SUV go with a Sequoia with the 5.7.

That is the sign that your vehicle is not made for towing max weight 6000 lbs. Even if it says that it is rated for that weight. Not to mention that is also not safe. If you need to stop fast the boat and trailer will push you into whatever is in front of you

No. Boat, trailer, fuel, equipment. passengers, ice chests. I figured it all up and it came to around 5200 pounds. I was trying to be conservative. Never wanted it to come down to splitting hairs. I would never want to tow anything “right at” the tow rating for a vehicle. No room for error. Really was just “fishing” for some educated, experienced advice. Didn’t know 2021+ Pathfinder did not have CVT. Just the type of info I was looking for…………..(minus the sarcasm) but I get it. Thanks anyway.

That is a great idea. For some reason my brain didn’t even think about the Sequoia.
