There’s really something to a certain demographic being terrified of urban cities. They’re the first to point to the places being “war zones” but this line of thinking goes back 50 years or more. It is clearly and inferiority complex.

We took a cruise out of New Orleans this summer. We lived in New Orleans for awhile about 25 years ago and wanted our kids to see where we lived. I was shocked at how bad it looked. Trash, boarded up buildings, and graffiti everywhere. It wasn't the nicest place 25 years ago, but it had character. Now, it just looks like a third world country. Thankfully, we only had to stay one night.

Sorry to hear that you are poor, but by every metric this past summer travel season has been described as historic and record breaking.
An interesting part of the travel is that the largest demand was in luxury travel. First class seating on planes rose significantly and higher end hotels and restaurants outpaced budget accommodations.

Haven’t read this thread but there’s certainly SOMETHING going on.

Everyone has felt it this summer. Restaurants that are good are dropping like flies. The heat has been outrageous and the crime obviously.

Most brutal summer for business I can ever recall besides some of the obvious hurricane/Covid stuff.

When it's hot as it's been, you can REALLY smell the piss in the quarter! That said, I have a sneaky suspicion that the murder rate and other violence in New Orleans plays a part.

I think it’s a combination. Ridiculous brutal heat, horrible crime wave in every city keeping people away, inflation out of control keeping vacations to minimum.

Locals aren’t even going out as much.

I'm not sure health and safety are top priority for a demographic that allowed tons of random strangers to raw dog their asses in anonymous bath house encounters during the AIDS epidemic.

Everyone in the industry has ALWAYS called July-september "the slow season". It's why the city created so many small events to boost tourism in this time. Coolinary, restaurant month, red dress run, essence, decadence. All happen during the slowest times. Then in the "ber" months it picks back up. Then carnival and fest season follows.

Crime is bad but crime has always been bad in Nola. The 90s it was worse.
I do think the heat of this summer kept even day trippers home. I know me personally I go out on the city a lot. I didn't go one time since August 2nd mainly because of heat.

They aren’t. My local burger joint made a plea on Facebook warning they were close to closing. Thankfully it woke people up but I’m hearing the same from a lot of local places. Been a tough year for many.

I live in Houston now. It was Myti-Burger. General comment that this has been a rough summer for a lot of service industry.

ETA side note. I’m seeing a lot of the places that usually have packed patios all summer setting up air conditioned tents to try and get people in. That extra cost must suck.

Ah, gotcha.

A lot of the local places I went yesterday had decent crowds for football and such. Haven't seen a lot of those places full all summer. No one was really sitting on patios yet. Think we have a few weeks for that to start here.

But a bigger issue is taking last week as an example… never a great week between dead of august, leading into the holiday weekend, schools just started etc…. Last year had a small citywide convention in XeroCon hitting the weekday portion. 2019 had a small military/government convention. This year, nothing.

Pair that with last May/June having very large conventions in urology, psych, diabetes, Human Resources, science/tech, and even ISTE filling in the normally slow Sunday-tues pre-Essence and people were storing away money much deeper into the second quarter. This year that stopped with heart society on the Tulane grad weekend.

Like i said last page - 2022 was a banner spring leading into an ok enough summer as a slow season goes. 2023 was an ok spring and historically bad summer.

You stated something about the abortion law causing convention(s) to back out.

Did one actually cite that as an issue for changing or was it more of a passing type event.

Multiple cited it directly

One back in Jan, and one in April come to mind.

2023 was a bad year on the horizon for a bit. Heat, crime, politics, etc, all added to the challenges but even in a brisk and crime free environment this was going to be a challenging year.
