It's great now with FIL, we never had much in common except the family but years ago he showed up at my house and tried to tell me what I was doing wrong raising my kids. I snapped cussed him out told him I would stomp his arse if he ever tried that shite again and now he stays outa my business so its great

I looked through this thread, looks like there are some pretty good stories in here, but before I read them I will offer you this.
If you try to find a common interest by doing something that is "his thing", you just have to play along. Make him think he is teaching you something and don't question him. You can say things in away that he will think it is his idea or that he has made the decision.
Like when he struggled to remove the torx screw. Let him go about it however he wants, but just suggest to him that you can look it up to see if there is another way to do it. Say something like "I can look it up if you can't get it. Just let me know". That way, he will be able to decide what he wants to do.
If he isn't into sports then don't invite him to watch a game. And just let him do things his way, you do things your way.

With all that said in my last post, a good friend of mine has a FIL that sounds almost exactly like yours. The FIL is a dick. As in, anyone who knows him says that he is a dick.
Years ago my friend called me to ask if I would go look at his FIL computer. I agreed and I was able to fix it for him. While I did we just shot the shite, talking.. Well he talked about shite he was into. I just asked questions like I was interested. When I was finished he wanted to pay me & I refused. He then told me I could use something (not going to get into detail about it) he has that is pretty valuable to have access to anytime I want.
I told that to my friend and he was pissed. He said not only does he not allow him to have access to it, he will not provide it for get togethers, making my friend have to bring his own of this certain thing.
A few months later he told me that everytime he talked to his FIL he would always bring me up and one time he had gone over and my friend was fixing something on his computer and his FIL told him "all you doing is wasting your time, call OweO and he will have it fixed in no time"..
It wasn't about me at all. He really was just being a dick to his son in law, but I am sure FILs like that are rare. To go out of their way to obviously be a dick.

On a serious note, my FIL is barely in my wife’s life. Met him twice my entire life and one of those was very briefly at the wedding (he didn’t even walk her down the aisle). Guess I’ve got it made.

My FIL is a wanker that was never in his daughter's life.
Her aunt and uncle are gold.

Unfortunately never had one. He disappeared in my wife’s life when she was 7. He died last year never meeting any of his grandkids. I had hoped for a great FIL growing up with a POS stepdad. Not in the cards...just being the best dad I know how to be.

What is this mysterious and valuable thing you speak of? Sex doll?

My FIL was an Engineer at a NASA contractor, he’s still a Type A guy. Kind of a smart Clark Gable & Jack Nicholson hybrid. Met him a year before marrying his daughter and started calling him by his first name then.
He’s been a good dude, he doesn’t get into my & his daughter’s personal space (or the fütlings’ space either).
Chris: You are a very weird cat.

My FIL is a genuinely good dude. We get along, share beers, smoke cigars, cook food, etc. He's a guy I'd be friends had I met him separate from his daughter. Hell, he might lurk on here. If he does, he'll know my username, so "hey, FIL. The new grand kid is doing great!"

My FIL is very quiet, loves his grandchildren and is a kind person. He likes to work on any project himself and will only ask for help if something is too heavy or awkward to handle. Occasionally he will ask me how I would do something and I share my comments. But basically he is capable and has always fixed things himself.
He doesn’t talk much because he doesn’t wear his hearing aids and this discourages conversation. I think he likes it that way. He never let his son do anything so his son grew up not knowing how to do even simple things. Son cannot even change a faucet washer. FIL feels like he needs to do whatever the task is so it is done his way.
Overall, we get along great. As he got older he started asking me for advice on doctors and surgeries, etc. This brought us even closer as friends. He is 86 and can still get around pretty good.

quote:Man that seriously makes me sad to hear you missed out on having a good father/son relationship on two accounts but sounds like it’s going to make you very in tune with being involved in your kids’ lives- as it often does in those situations.

Mine is great. He laughs at my dumb jokes and likes me to hunt and fish with him. He is a great grandfather to my kids and a pleasure to be around.

My ex-husband's parents both loved me. In fact, I still exchange Christmas cards with my ex-mother-in-law.

You need to call the guy out. It worked with my fil.

Challenge that mofo to fisticuffs straight up. He doesn’t respect you. You’ll either beat that respect into him, or find out why he doesn’t like you

FIL died way too early ,great guy. His wife on the other hand is the most unlikeable woman I’ve ever met.
