Very lucky to have a great fFiL. Lives almost 2 hours away out in the country. Cattle, critters, fishing pond, gun range, full auto shop. It's so nice to get away from the city and know there won't be any drama at the in-laws. He just did some work on my truck. He's just a good old country man. I'm always learning stuff from him and I hope we have many years together.

My FIL is delusional and a pathological liar. He cheated on my MIL, got caught red-handed, continued to cheat, while denying and being caught over and over. They divorced.

He now proclaims his family has disowned him, and continues to deny cheating, and doesn’t bother trying to rebuild a relationship with my wife, despite her efforts to open communication. He is a perpetual victim.

He has a 3 year old granddaughter he doesn’t ask to see or inquire about, we just get an amazon package at Christmas and on her birthday.

I haven’t had to talk to him in 2 years, but safe to say we likely wouldn’t get along now.

FIL overall is a good man. Deals with some mental health issues with alcohol which always ends bad and will basically disappear for months at a time.

When he is doing well, he is a lot of fun to hang with. Dude needs help though...

MIL while nosey as shite, she is extremely helpful in our lives.

FIL doesn't know anything about things the common man should know, like simple auto maintenance and fixing things around the house. I'm not Tim Allen but I can do most things yet he always feels the need to tell my wife how I should be doing stuff. He doesn't understand his daughter is in my care now and always wants to intervene It aggravates me more than it should. Other than that, we get along fine.

My FIL had a POS Dad, and so he became very close to his own FIL (my wife's maternal grandfather) and considered him a father figure. This is what he told me when I was gonna propose and he said he wanted us the have the same kind of relationship. The problem is I have a good Dad and have never been looking for a father figure. 6 years later and I've given him 2 grandkids he loves but it's clear we're never going to be that close. We get along but I always feel like he wants to be better friends than we are gonna be

Never knew my FIL. Judging by what I know about him, we wouldn’t have much in common, but probably would have gotten along fine.

My MIL died right before our wedding and I didn’t know her well at all. She and my wife didn’t get along very well due to her alcoholism.

I have aunts in laws basically. One is a 60 yr old single woman that’s overbearing and annoying as shite. Comes from money, but lives outsider her means (basically dips into her parent’s estate way too much to run with the crowd and other stupid shite). It grates on me when she starts whining about money because of how much she’s pissed away. My wife is an only grandchild on that side so she’s the sole benefactor. I just hope some of my wife’s inheritance is there when it’s all over.

The other is married to a doctor and has a teenager. They’re pretty cool most of the time. We vacation with them a couple times a year and basically they get a big condo or house and invite us, and we hang out with them some and they’re cool with us just doing our own thing. They’re not the type that expect you to be with them the whole time because they pay for the living arrangement.

I love my FIL like my own father. He's a great guy that worked his arse off and raised 5 college educated children who are all normal productive members of society.

Also, when my own father died he became the person I go to for advice and help with hard decisions.

Lol my girlfriends dad doesn’t like me but he’s an odd man. Both her parents are incredibly conservative Christian (not the good kind, the kind that make you believe their almost liberal by the way they act), and it’s really hard to hold a conversation with her dad about anything. Good guy I guess, but personality of a fish

My FIL is an awesome guy. We get along well. Now, my MIL is a vengeful, life sucking bitch that I wouldn't piss on if she was on fire.

You are a good son-in-law. This stuff, while annoying, is not worth fighting over. The important things, like him wanting to be involved with your kids (or eventual if you don't have any and plan to), being there for you and your wife when you need, are what really matters.

I wouldn't even call what you described as "not getting along."

My FIL basically is an self proclaimed expert in everything.

That's pretty much every 50-60 year old man if we are all honest about it. It's a hard thing to do to sit by and watch someone about to screw something up and not say anything.

Never gave a shite what why FIL or MIL thought or thinks about anything. I didn't marry them I married their daughter. Also didn't ask a single one of them 'permission' to marry their daughter. Adults don't do that.

My FIL can aggravate the piss out of me sometimes, but he's a good guy. We help each other out time to time. We don't always see eye to eye, but we're mature enough to act like family should.

It could be it's time you just punch him out.

Had pretty miserable relationship with my mil and fil, experts on anything and everything.Didn’t like me but disliked me less than other son-in-law,daughter in laws.My wife was widow, they hadn’t spoken to her first husband in 2 years before he died.I avoided divorcees with children because I never wanted to be involved in all that drama with ex-husbands.I figured a widow would be safe, fil and wife’s brother way worse than ex-husband,they did everything they could to turn her boys against me and spoil our relationship. Her Ex-father-in-law on the other hand ,couldn’t have been nicer to me,I got fairly close to him.Ex-mil was nice also but I could tell it hurt her to see me with her grandsons, instead of her son,
Ultimate irony, when pos in-laws went bankrupt due to their own stupidity here they came with their hands out, looking for a bailout.I wanted to tell them to go lay in the bed they made for themselves, wife insisted we had to help them out. They were somewhat humble for awhile, soon as things settled down they reverted back to their arrogant, know it all selves.
