Clayton is a very popular DA on the west side of the river. He's calling out law enforcement and leadership problems formally with this:

quote:

Tony Clayton, who recently purchased the Roumain Building downtown, complained that hundreds of teenagers gather on Third Street on weekends near his building and warned about “turf wars.” He complained about “nightclubs” causing problems downtown, though other attendees defended the importance of downtown nightlife. They added that downtown has low rates of crime, though Clayton says that won’t always be the case if the issues are not addressed.

He's one of several business owners with property in Baton Rouge that are sounding the alarm on the lack of leadership in the city. The problem is that the big dogs (Bernhard, Engquist, etc.) are silent and seem totally content watching the efforts made to improve the city in the early 2000's go to waste.

Stayed downtown after the Ole Miss game. There were literal street races going on all night on downtown streets.

Engines revving, tire burnouts, etc., on a night when downtown hotels were filled with visitors from all over.

Horrible look from a shithole city.

Could it be that Clayton is laying groundwork to run for mayor?

What do you want them to do? They are busy running businesses.

Tony made all his money on fees from big personal injury cases partnering with various trial lawyers in the greater Baton Rouge, Louisiana area and lawyers who were also members of the Louisiana Legislature. He is also a pretty good politician…for a politician.

No--he lives in Pointe Coupee on False river. Maybe Governor or AG.

I’d vote for him for either seat. Solid politician.

Downtown is already lost. Unless he has plans for using the Roumain Bldg during the daytime hours of the weekday, then sounds like he made a poor decision.

I wish Tony would have a more prominent role in Louisiana politics. I think with the recognizable name that he has garnered over the years starting with the Derek Todd Lee trial, and the actually will to do something for the greater good of his community with the lack of political bias that he has shown he would be ideal in a more powerful position. However we are in Louisiana so Ik it doesn't work quite like that and im not sure he has that ambition

Wife and I stayed downtown this past weekend for the Bama game. It was very hood around third street. I never remembered it being like that around 2012.

The movement is underway to transition from Broome. Soon you’ll start seeing people across demographic and party lines coalesce around no 3rd turn for the mayor.

I don't care their party or their race. Just someone who isn't going to let crime take control and has the best interest of the parish at heart.

Don't cowtow to outside interest. Make the parish the best it can be for everyone. And that probably means letting St. George do their thing. And trying to get some of the legislators and local officials from neighboring parish in the same room to at least talk about regional issues.

It's not a hard job if there's no major local disaster to deal with. You just have to hire the right people and stay on the right side of the law. Then you can shake hands and show up to all the fancy dinners and take credit for other people's work. But you have to make damn sure the people you hire can get things done. And that's where Broom failed miserably and Holden didn't.

In 8-10 years, you run for Lt. Governor or senator if you avoid fricking things up.

When Kip helped spearheaded the revitalization of downtown in the early 2000's it was the place to be for young professionals and college upperclassmen/recent graduates. Unfortunately, and inevitably, a different class of people (of all races), one less apt to spend money and more apt to cause trouble, wanted to be a part of the "in crowd" and started frequenting downtown. That slowly led to the original customer base abandoning downtown.

Then, EBR elected a mayor and leadership, 2x, that doesn't really give a shite if downtown turns into a dump....which it is heading that way now. Within the next decade or so it will be abandoned once more as it was in the late 80's and 90's

Kip and his leaders (many of whom were Republicans even though Kip was a Democrat) really worked hard to try to build downtown into something akin to a place like Austin, TX. Unfortunately, that vision was abandoned when the parish elected leaders who would just as soon see downtown look like Watts, CA or Liberty City, FL, than somewhere like Austin.

Tony Clayton is your next Kip Holden. Baton Rouge would be damn lucky to get him as a mayor.

you have bums and teens rummaging through cars on a nightly basis. Bums pissing on the sidewalk and fighting infront of the new library. “Creature” tags everywhere.

I'll believe it when I see it. The movers and shakers here (albeit, the very few left) are too pedestrian to do shite. When those frickers laid down on St George, I'd seen all I had to see. They aren't interested in saving EBR, nor do they have the means anyway. They sat idly by and now it's over. We're in the endgame now.

Prepare your anus for C. Denise Marcelle or Chauna Banks as the next mayor. Regardless of which one wins, they'll be worse than SWB, with an even shittier police chief combined with some kind of activist, nutjob district attorney.

It's okay. Ole Miss fans understand, because 20 years ago Jackson looked and sounded like Baton Rouge does today.
