Toll revenue would only pay 17% of the cost of a new Mississippi River Bridge

Toll revenue would pay for only 17 percent of a new bridge across the Mississippi River in Baton Rouge, a state official said Tuesday morning.
Eric Kalivoda, deputy secretary for the state Department of Transportation and Development, made the comment during the first meeting of a panel set up to recommend ways to finance a new bridge, which would cost up to $1 billion.
quote:
Kalivoda's comments quickly reinforced what officials knew coming in -- how to finance a new bridge is a huge financial and political challenge with no easy answers.
quote:
Kalivoda told the group that, while more research is being done, at least 75 percent of the financing would have to come from other sources even if the impact of tolls is revised upward slightly.
The tolls could range from $3 for passenger vehicles for $8 for heavy trucks, according to state estimates.
What the state envisions is a six-lane structure with four-lane approaches on each side connecting La. 1 to La. 30.

We’re gonna build a bridge and make west Baton Rouge pay for it

Close enough, time to break ground.
Well, maybe time for another study first.

How is it that seemingly every other fricking state can finance a toll way with tolls almost exclusively, that a 24 mile long bridge over open water is supported through tolls exclusively with money to spare INCLUDING paying for a damn police force, yet financing a new bridge less than I mile long through tolls is not feasible?

We know the answers... but we need more studies to reinforce them. And more studies... and more

Wouldn't that kind of depend on how high the toll was?

17% ??
But it generates revenue every year. And since there will be zero maintenance dollars required for it (just like every other bridge in louisiana) it will pay for itself by the time it falls down due to lack of maintenance

That's bullshite based off overly conservative numbers (both in terms of toll and duration).
They are working off the Sunshine Bridge model, where the toll would be nothing and the duration would be very limited (and, then some dumbass will introduce legislation to permanently remove tolls from the bridge).
Not gonna happen here. I can bet you commercial carriers would be willing to pay $20 toll each way to avoid the BR clusterfrick.

How’s much does a truck driver make? $20 and hour? $30 an hour? $50 an hour? Yeah a freight company would sign every driver up and save a shite pot of money not sitting in that parking lot that politics created on I-10

Didn’t they recently build a really nice fancy suspension bridge connecting nowhere to nowhere an hour north of BR?

There is some St. francisville baw who’s about to come in here and start condescendingly telling us we don’t know traffic design and that bridge is serving its purpose and that it’s not a waste of money.
I distinctly remember him and would live for him to come here and again explain why a 10’s of millions of dollars bridge was needed for 7.34 vehicles per day
ETA: 100’s of millions
Thanks BOX

Every time this comes up I think of that bridge. I drive over it about once a week and there is almost no traffic on it.

You forgot a zero on that bridge cost.

I went to one of the public meetings for the I-10 project, and one of the DOTD officials told that the commercial vehicles wouldn’t be using the bridge as much as the average person would think based on a prior study due to how long it would take to get to the bridge from I-10 (if I’m remembering that correctly).

From the article:
Cost: $1,000,000,000 (DAMN)
Number of vehicles a day: 150,000 (DAMN)
Toll: $3 for passenger vehicles / $8 for trucks (say $5 average) (that's expensive - may see significant traffic decrease which could impact the numbers below)
So if the traffic stayed constant:
Daily toll revenue: 150,000 x $5 = $750,000 A DAY (DAMN)
Days to make $1 billion = 1,333 days (3.65 years)
Not sure why they are saying only 17 percent would be paid by tolls. Sure there are additional expenses and time value of money to consider but seems like over 5-10 years a majority of the cost could be recovered in tolls.

We can't even run basic things like school boards without massive corruption yet we think we can trust entities in this state to properly manage infrastructure funding like this?

The president only wants five billion, seven hundred million dollars for miles and miles of border wall. It will take nearly 20% of that to build one bridge? I know construction and such IS expensive, but, damn.
