Today is the 79th anniversary of the beginning of the bloodiest battle in human history

The Battle of Stalingrad, waged from August 23, 1942 to February 2, 1943, was a turning point of World War II. Some two million men would be listed as killed, wounded, or missing/captured once the smoke had cleared, with 95% of the city being totally destroyed in the process.

I think I heard a stat one time that said that the average life span of a soldier sent to fight in that battle was 24 hours. Crazy.

Stalingrad, Midway, and the Battle of Britain were the three most crucial battles of the entire war.

I wish they would make like a Band of Brothers version of the eastern front that holds nothing back in terms of production value and violence.

If you ever doubt the stupidity at the highest levels of leadership in the Third Reich, look no further than Stalingrad. From Hitler’s decision to take the city, to OKH entrusting 6th Army’s flanks to the the Italians and Romanians, to Goering’s absurd proclamation that the Luftwaffe could supply 6th Army, to Paulus refusing to attempt a breakout to link up with Manstein’s 4th Panzer Army; all these insanely stupid decisions came together to doom 6th Army to destruction.

Imagine going into a battle knowing that you would most likely die soon. I know I couldn't do it.

You know modern day Hollywood would sprinkle in some minorities/women/oppressed group and try to make it cool.

Um...D-Day was pretty damned important.

Couldn't sell. To tell it accurately would be sympathetic to both the Nazis for trying to destroy communism, and the Russians for defending their homeland.
Can't make Nazis sympathetic in any way, so says Hollywood.

Image it’s 1942 and you’re a 19 year private in the Red Army fighting in Stalingrad. You know when you’re sent into battle there are “blocking” companies behind you with orders to shoot you down if you retreat. You also know Stalin has put out a directive that if you surrender to the Germans your family will be evicted from their home and cutoff from all state welfare. You also know that even if you do surrender to the Germans there is a good chance they’ll just execute you on the spot. The best you can hope for if you surrender is to be sent to Germany where you’ll be starved, beaten, and worked to death.

Well, as a poster pointed out, the problem with Stalingrad is you didn’t live for more than a week.

I’m pretty sure those decisions were a result of top Nazi officials trying to placate an increasingly insane Hitler. They likely knew it was stupid but Hitler became hysterical during the 2nd half of the war and wouldn’t listen to anyone

I remember fighting my way from Stalingrad to the roof of the Reichstag with Viktor Reznov.

Since the Nazis were well known for their tolerant and inclusive behavior

From a US morale standpoint I think Midway was absolutely crucial. The Japanese were sinking our merchant ships and tankers faster than we could build them - Midway was the first defeat for the Japanese navy in I think 200 years.
