Can you imagine bobbing on the surface in 6-foot chop, hoping someone will somehow find you before the air runs out or you get beat to death being thrown around inside that thing?

Seems that about 99% chance the thing imploded, with the other options being snagged on bottom/wreck, stranded in middle of water column, or floating aimlessly on surface way off the initial drop from the tender. Doesn’t sound like a promising outcome here.

The submersible had seven backup systems to return to the surface, including sandbags and lead pipes that drop off and an inflatable balloon. One system is designed to work even if everyone aboard is unconscious, Pogue said.

I bet they forgot an extra two AA batteries in case the Xbox controller goes dead.

I would imagine there was a catastrophic hull failure. Terrible

So, either they imploded (most likely scenario) or they drifted to the surface and are slowly suffocating (most terrifying scenario) while the rescuers search for a needle in a haystack.

All power lost, what scenarios would have to take place for this to happen. I mean the tracking of this vessel had to be top priority and first class from a technology stand point, right? And I heard somewhere but haven’t seen a manifest there were some pretty influential passengers.

I mean they could simply open the hatch if they floating on the surface.

don't think they can, and even if they could, I don't what the floatation of that tank is, will it even float? plus, that's a rough part of the ocean, that thing would probably fill with water and be tossed about like a cork

But wait. There's more! The hatch is bolted shut from the outside.

Wrong

I can definitely concede to being wrong but if you’re going to send a vessel three miles down in the ocean one would think you would want to keep track of its whereabouts. We track much less valuable things a lot closer. We are talking loss of lives here.

I can't imagine going down 2.5 miles under the surface in something the size of a minivan.

Like everyone else I hope they are found alive but realize that's unlikely at this point.
