quote:I agree with you but without blanket policy how would we encourage people that are locked down to stay put? If everything is closed there is no point in leaving home. If I can jump in the car and leave a hotspot to drive to somewhere that is business as usual, that doesn't help.
You can't compare Lake Placid to NYC either, which is why blanket policy is the worst policy.

The laws were more about population control than anything else. Government, elected by people, decided people were too stupid to make informed decisions.
Quite the irony.

well that is basically the idea of why the government was setup as a democratic republic in the first place, no?

In NYC, the average person knows about 2 people who that happened to in just the last month.
Where did you get this info on what the average person in NYC knows?
Last week in NYC, there were 513 deaths (supposedly from the Covid) per 1,000,000 residents. You are saying that the average person knows almost 4,000 people and that 2 of those 4,000 people died?
Come on.

That’s actually exactly a basis for not “opening shite back up”.
It's an argument for not opening shite back up if you are scared of your own shadow and think "if it saves only one life it's worth it."
If you are a rational person it is completely more evidence that it is time to start ramping back up our economy. It is impossible to completely mitigate all risk, and the risk benefit analysis says its time to get back to work.

To protect from mob rule.

The Swedes don't mistrust their government as much BECAUSE of how their government responded to this. Their government is not as power hungry as ours and does not lie to their citizens about wars over terrorism, or uh, WMDs, or uh, regime change.
That's actually far from correct. The Swedish government is very controlling, and socialist policies are very pervasive, but so pervasive that it is ingrained in their culture. Their speech is very limited, and a lot of it is limited by other citizens who will not allow you to speak freely and controversially. You should read up some on Swedish culture, or watch interviews with Aron Flam and Henrik Jonsson.

This is actually the stupidest thing said on here. Another example of this virus may affect some people in horrific consequences but it’s also further evidence that the vast majority of people does not show signs. Let the virus do what it’s going to do. If that means affecting a small part of the population while we are opening the country back up so be it. We are a country of over 350,000,000 people. If that means me getting the virus and dying so be it. The end results would be worse if we don’t.

Some of you snowflakes are afraid of your own shadow's now.
Stop being afraid of life, go to work and live your life. There are far worse shite out there than Covid-19 that will take your life. If covid took you out then you were on the way out anyways. Acted just as the flu would if you had something wrong with you.
Stop being pussies and being afraid to live life. Stop watching CNN and MSNBC, go outside and live.
The people calling it the flu or not even that bad are the pussies that need to convince themselves that there's nothing to worry about.

Well, of course it is when you attribute every death to COVID 19.
If we say the cause of every death is from salmonella, we could call it a pandemic too.

The numbers from NYC DO NOT in any way, shape or form correlate to the rest of the country. NYC is a truly unique area.
It is one of the most densely populated areas in the country. People use mass transit multiple times a day. They live/work in skyscrapers, which means they are crammed in elevators like sardines several times each day as well.
The rest of the country doesn't live like that, and that is precisely why if you subtract the numbers from NYC and the surrounding areas (NJ, CT, etc.) it really isn't that big of a deal except in a few other areas with unique circumstances. LA had Mardi Gras, and that was a huge contributor to the problem there.
I am sick of being told how horrible it is where I live when the actual numbers DO NOT support the hysteria. Because of NYC, though, I can't work, friends treat me like I have the plague if I suggest we get together, and just going to the store for bread and milk is a gigantic ordeal.
It's time to end this for the areas that are not in bad shape.
The numbers in NYC are used to set the lower-bound on IFR for covid specifically because it is densely populated. It reduces the possible range of error in the estimations of total infected percentage.
And it only requires literally elementary school math skills to understand that since 0.1% of NYC's population has already died of covid, that the IFR absolutely cannot be below that value.

NY isn't even doing that, they are including people who died from other issues but may have had it
They released a batch of probable cases last week. Before that, they were only including confirmed positives for cases and deaths. And only counting those confirmed covid deaths, 0.1% of NYC's total population had already died from it.

quote:I said in the last month, not the last week. And in the last month more than 1 in 1,000 NYC residents died of covid. I know more than 1,000 people and I live in Podunk. A person in NYC easily knows 2,000.
Where did you get this info on what the average person in NYC knows?

Come on.
We might only have 100-200 people we call "friends" or that we talk to semi-regularly, but we know a lot more than that and we would be upset if they died. Old classmates/teachers, coworkers, friends of the family. Hell, I have more than 100 people in my family. Maybe 200 if I think about it.
