I said in the last month, not the last week. And in the last month more than 1 in 1,000 NYC residents died of covid. I know more than 1,000 people and I live in Podunk. A person in NYC easily knows 2,000.
We might only have 100-200 people we call "friends" or that we talk to semi-regularly, but we know a lot more than that and we would be upset if they died. Old classmates/teachers, coworkers, friends of the family. Hell, I have more than 100 people in my family. Maybe 200 if I think about it.

You have to open things back up and let people who are susceptible to continue to social distance and other tasks to remain somewhat quarantined.

There are easily 1,000 people in my life that I hug or shake hands with and talk to every time I see them. And like I said, I live in Podunk and I am far from a social butterfly.

There have been numerous times in my life where I've heard an old classmate or work acquaintance had died and I didn't find out about it until months or years after they passed. It's safe to assume that there are some I still don't know about. A large chunk of that hypothetical 2000 would probably play out like that for me. There might be a few hundred at best that I would actually be notified about.
But maybe I just don't have enough friends.

The numbers from NYC DO NOT in any way, shape or form correlate to the rest of the country. NYC is a truly unique area.

Tell you what, let's run some numbers. NYC pop: 8.4 million and roughly 10k deaths due to covid.
If you know 2000 people, there is a 90.8% chance that you know at least one person who died, and an 82.3% chance that you know at least 2.
If you know 1000 people, there is a 70.6% chance that you know at least one person who died, and a 49.8% chance that you know at least 2.
If you know 500 people, there is a 44.9% chance that you know at least one person who died, and a 20.1% chance that you know at least 2.
So the cutoff for 50% of New Yorkers to know at least 2 people who have died of covid so far is right at 1,000 "friends".
Is that more people than a typical New Yorker might reasonably know and hear of their death within a month's time? It's arguable, I guess.
And that was way more work than should have been necessary given how innocuous the statement was.

Can they not walk on the streets? Of course, I’m talking about essential workers only. I know everyone else in NYC is staying indoors at all times because this is so serious.
