Is it?
It is.

Put another way for those who think they're counting every single death as covid (they're not), there are still roughly twice as many people dying per week as would be expected for a population that size (average 2700 per week vs. 1450 expected based on US death rates).

And for another comparison, NYC's share of flu deaths during a really bad flu season would be about 1500 total for the *year*.

It makes me wonder how accurate these tests actually are

Buddy’s wife got tested. They didn’t even do the test right, they swabbed her throat. And these were “medical professionals”. Of course it was negative.

was thinking the same thing until I read

All were tested over the weekend in partnership with Confluence Health, and all are now in isolation.

Instead of “it’s just like the flu” we should have been saying “it’s not even as bad as the flu”

That’s actually exactly a basis for not “opening shite back up”.

I’ve really learned how stupid the people are on here in the last month.

It far exceeds what I’d ever expected.

You want to continue indefinitely the destruction of the basic, fundamental freedoms upon which Western Civilization and more importantly the United States are grounded, due to a highly contagious but--outside of specific, easily identifiable subsets--nonlethal and not permanently harmful disease, even though those measures don't actually eliminate the disease and cause severe long-term damage to our health care system, and it's the OT that's stupid?

Korkstand thinks every single city/town/village/community/household/person in the US should be treated like NYC

It makes perfect sense once you see the reactions people have when you tell them covid is much worse than the flu. Especially on the poliboard. It's always something like "why do you want to shut everything down over the flu you pussy?"

I understand that this virus is much worse than the flu, but I still don't think we should have shut anything down. To repeat "it's just the flu" incessantly oozes of trying to convince oneself that it's not dangerous. Like a pussy would do. Or a dumbass. It is dangerous, but face it anyway.

Do you troll everyone or just me?

I don't know how to make it more clear as to why I focus on the NYC data. It is by far the most useful we have if the goal is to determine a relatively accurate IFR.

But yeah, I do think every town should be treated like NYC. I don't think anything should have ever been shut down, anywhere.

It seemed a bit contradictory.

Not picking on you at all. Just think it’s silly that the bumfrick parts of our country shut down just based on NYC or Nola.

After reading your recent posts I think we agree on that

Lots of people seem to think the same as you, but WHY?

I think covid is about 5X as deadly as the flu. That is an estimation based on the available evidence as I have interpreted it. That's it. This thought is independent from what I think our response to it should be.

Most, though, just assume that if you think it's worse than the flu, then you must support the shutdown everywhere. That doesn't make any sense. Why is it assumed that flu-level danger is the cutoff? Why not 10X flu? Or 20X?

Logically, from the start, I think that's just how it had to be. Given that we know what happened in other countries, if you as a governor have some densely populated areas in your state, what would you do? If you shut it all down, you are asked wtf you're doing. If you don't shut it down, inevitably your population centers will get hit, you will be asked wtf you waited so long. You can't win, but doing something is easier to answer for than doing nothing.

I might be misinterpreting this post. The first sentence doesn’t seem to go along with the second.

Just wanted to come in here and post that no one in this entire thread (me included) knows a damn thing about any of this and it's hilarious that so many in this thread are adamant that "their way" is the right way.

In other words, I don't think a shutdown is justified anywhere, including NYC.

Nobody wants to do it, but at some point we have to have the discussion about the value of a life and do the math. This value is already sort of implied based on all the other risks we face every day. This value has been calculated at various different amounts in numerous lawsuits. It feels like a shitty thing to do, but it must be done.
