She told me that she saw no part of the actual fee, just an hourly rate and tips, and a very small percentage when people bought products.

Well, I was paying the place an amount, of which she saw no part of, and paying her $10.

So pay her 10?
Yeah, sure, let's go with that...

at home she is collecting all the proceeds. At a salon she is either paying for her space or only getting a portion of the charged amount

So she was seeing some of what the place was charging.

I could give two shits...just sayin.

Sounds like a part of the fee.

Its minimum wage from what I gather, they really worked for tips and getting people to buy products.

Regardless, she's still making significantly more off of me than she would otherwise.

She's a big time hustler though, she always had her days completely booked while other people were standing around. Always pushing products, I imagine she did kind of well.

The mindset that people should just tip because it's only a few bucks is why tipping has become outrageous in America. I went to a beer place in Lake Tahoe last week that has a wall of taps that you pour yourself. You give them a credit card at the door, and it's transferred to a wristband. You pay by the ounce of beer poured. So, it's a bar where you essentially do the job of the bartender. There was a tip jar at the hostess stand. I have no idea what service they were expecting tips for.

I typically tip well at restaurants, and I usually just tip when there is a question of whether or not one is needed, but I still think the service industry has gone off the rails here.

I tip around 15-20% and around Xmas it’s higher. I’m a pretty generous person when comes to rewarding quality work, and my guy is good at fitting me on short notice.

Gotta take care of your people.

The barber I go to runs his own place. He charges $16. If I have the exact amount on me, I will give him $16, if I just have a $20 I give him that and just tell him to keep it.

If she is running her own business then you are not expected to tip.

It isn't about the money, really. I'm just curious as to what the proper etiquette is and what I SHOULD be doing, and what is expected.

That's about it.

I'm not paying her less. She's actually getting way more money from me than she would have otherwise.

Just wanted to point out that you don't math too good. Before....she received some hourly rate, which is paid out of the haircut cost, and she got your 10 dollar tip. Now.....she only gets 10 dollars from you period.

So, no, she's not getting more money from you at all, she's actually getting less....and she still has the some living expenses she had before plus a little bit of up keep for her shop. Unless you're paying some astrinomical price for a haircut...fill us in.
You're actually getting more out of her now because you're saving some on gas/travel time.

If you like the service, then pay her some tip. Maybe just tip her 5 now though.

So the chick who has been cutting my hair for many years left the shop where she worked and is now cutting hair out of her house. Its actually a bit more convenient for me so I don't mind.

In the past I would pay the haircutting charges + 10$ tip.

Out of her house, she is charging the same amount as what the shop charged, cash.

So I gave her the money in cash, no tip. So that's $10 cheaper for me and a bit more convenient.

Should I be tipping her on top of the charge so I'm paying the same as I was before, or because what she is doing is now pure profit for her with no overhead, I don't need to tip anymore?

She's probably already making more from you without the tip. Without the overhead of having to pay the store owner she doesn't really need your tip any longer.

This is why I get my hair cut by the shop owner. If she needs more money she'll just raise her rates, no tip necessary for just doing her job.

Haircuts are one of the few things I happily tip for. It’s like 3 or 4 bucks once a month and I don’t want my barber to be upset next time I’m in

I misread op and thought she was only charging 10 for haircut now. My bad...but just say how much the cut costs and all of this thread debate would be settled.
