Dude you'd kill it if you did this full time. I do it full time and make between 18k-22k every 90 days gross. But I go all over the south thrifting, buying amazon pallets, going to small city auction houses, etc. I think with your knowledge and the Baton Rouge thrifting market you'd bring home 30k gross a quarter.
It’s just a hobby. About ten years back, I started buying anything and everything I could make a dollar off it. It became no longer fun, it turned into a business. I have a job that pays my six figures a year, plus my wife brings in a nice pension (she retired with the state at the age of 48).
Ive said it many times, I don’t do it for the money, I do it for the hunt.
That’s why I have no interest in buying Amazon pallets, or shopping at thrift stores, auctions, etc. There’s no hunt there. I like hitting the curbs. I like talking to the people I get the stuff from.
There is a poster here that moved to Portland. He use to be a picker like me. He still had a giant storage unit here in BR, full of “gold”. He invited me to help him clear some stuff. I made $1000+, but there was no hunt. I did learn a lot about movie posters and other stuff I got from him, but, like I said, it lacked the thrill of the hunt.
There was another poster here that invited me to his garage sale the day before he was having it. I find a box of video games he had marked for $50. I sold them for $300 and went back and gave him another $80, basically splitting it with him. There was no hunt there either because it was a private viewing.

I've been in my early 20s for the better part of a decade according to you.

What are you netting per year? $50-60k? I wouldn't quit my day job.

just cause you can't hit a golf ball doesn't mean someone else can't. a decent player can pretty easily hit a 2 or 3 iron.

Some people are very happy and content making $50,000 a year, working for themselves.
I plan to do it when I retire. I won’t be generating $50K+ a year because that’s a lot of work. I just want something to pass my time, make me a little money.

Sure and that fine, I was asking what he nets on $90k gross. I can't imagine it's more than that.

I do pretty good selling on ebay, and I agree it is the hunt that makes it fun, and the money is just added bonus.
Where I do disagree is thrift stores and auctions not providing that thrill. I have found some gems digging around if thrift stores. At the thrift store on Little John I found nearly $1000 dollars worth of action figures and accessories one afternoon in random grab bags. Spent about $30 bucks that day.

Why was shipping on poster $420?

Due to its size. It couldn’t be rolled or folded up. It measures 60x40.
I actually had planned on keeping the poster because I thought it was cool. I threw it up on eBay with opening bid of $500, no shipping, local pick up only (because I knew the shipping would be $300+), thinking no one will buy it. I was just hoping I’d get some low offers to get an idea of the value.
The guy that won it said he wanted it shipped and also knew it would be expensive. All I did was drop it off at BR Packing, and they did it all. I invoiced the winner what BR Packing charged, $420.

Would love to see the tax bill you get at the end of the year for this. Do you use Paypal? once you go over a certain amount of sales through 3rd party vendor, they are required to send a 1099K to the IRS. Make damn sure you save all your costs for supplies, shipping, etc so you can knock down the taxable income. I'm sure you already know all of this.
A few years ago my wife was making and selling jewelry on the side via ebay and getting paid through paypal. Neither of us knew about the possibility of getting taxed until we got a nice 10,000 bill from the IRS a few years later for unreported income. Luckily I was able to go back in her history and find her expenses used to make all of the stuff so we ended up only paying around 1,000. But it was a shock for sure.

quote:So would I. And I know it would take me a hell of a lot more than 10 yrs/week to drive to yard sales, weed through items, cart them home, clean 'em up, put them on ebay for auction and THEN have to purchase shipping supplies, packaging, labeling, addressing and get them in the mail. And God help me if that stuff didn't turn around within 2-3 days, my wife would raise hell if yard sell stuff were laying around the house or garage.
Because they're, jealous little ankle biters with nothing really going on in their own life. They hate seeing anyone succeed.
I know several folks who do this and make good money. They seem to really enjoy it. I suck at it.
BUT I always enjoy OP's threads and I love seeing his finds, and damn good job pulling $10,000 in 3 months.

This thread was more enjoyable when you were just sharing your weekend excursions. You have allowed the trolls to get you to tout your success at the sale.
Agreed. No one cares about the money made. I like seeing the hunt, purchases, and some cool items from history.

OP, are you allowed to deduct from your taxes on the amount of gas you buy to get to all these garage sales?

Trust me, when you start paying for trips, dinners at fine restaurants, etc, with money made from garage sales, your wife’s attitude will change quickly.
About 20 years ago, when I first started, I was maybe spending $25 total a week at garage sales. I bought two boxes of old hotel keys for $40. My wife threw a fit, told me to quit wasting money. I made a pact with her that day, the day I spend a lot of money on something and I lose money on it, I’d quit my hobby.
The box of keys sold for $500+ (maybe $1000, I forget). Three of the keys were from the MGM Grand that burnt down. They sold for $100+ each.
Since then, I’ve dropped $1000+ on collections, and flipped them for $1000’s. She didn’t bat an eye.

Not gas, but I can claim mileage (kind of the same).
