He actually acted like a clown that could be trusted around kids and that’s how it lured them in.
I read somewhere that his performance was heavily based on real life serial killer John Wayne Gacy who would dress up as a clown and acted friendly towards kids to lure them in.

I remember him most as Hexus in Fern Gully and Darkness in Legend. He could do villains.
