You learn something everyday. This time around, I learned from my FIL that having a roll of roofing felt and a tub of roofing nails in your attic for a rainy day is worth gold right after a storm. He also strapped down his two AC units. Who knew those things would flip over and you lose all the freon, then you wont have AC when the power does come back on? huh

I have learned from experience but Katrina taught a lot. Although I live in central Mississippi and do not experience the hurricane damage those in south Louisiana do, we have ice storms. We have a small generator, plenty of gas cans 2 window units, extension cords, propane stove with fuel, small solar panel and 12v light bulbs. Over the years I have learned. We never lost power, but we were prepared. I can use the gas and we'll eat the food.

As soon as the forecast suggests a hit to your area is possible treat it like a certainty. If you are wrong, well you just have extra gas and food.

With last year's hurricane fiasco, I was wrong 3 times and was finally right with Zeta. All the gas I had went into my truck three times...

I learned after Zeta to get a dual fuel generator. While everyone is fighting over gas, I'm easily filling up my propane tanks. Plus the generators run longer and cleaner on propane.

Apparently people mixed that up and thought you’re supposed to load up on gas AFTER the storm. It’s ridiculous, almost a week later and lines are still wrapping around gas stations.

fill the bathtub full of water so you can dip a bucket in it to use and flush the toilet once water is turned off

Freeze a bunch of water bottles

Take pictures of all your documents and pics of your home and automobiles

Stock up on hard liquor. No one wants to be drinking hot beer all next week.

And oil. A ton of subdivision divas are finding out the hard way that their whole home generators require frequent oil changes.
