Three Anthropic researchers went public last night with chilling concerns about out-of-control AI, warning it could destroy humans this decade.

Anthropic AI researcher Jacob Coxon wrote on X, after resigning Tuesday to sound the alarm: "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger."

Anthropic alignment-science lead Evan Hubinger responded: "Jacob is correct here — we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to."

Samuel Marks, Anthropic scalable-oversight lead, added: "AI developers believe their technology could cause human extinction (or similarly bad outcomes). This could happen in the next few years. In general, the more senior the employee, the more concerned they are."

Why it matters: They're hardly alone. Their warnings came just days after top OpenAI leaders, including CEO Sam Altman, said AI is speeding into a scary, uncontrollable phase

Then the Senior Managers and those others in charge who are so worried about this should pull the plug on these machines now.

Yes, because all of these people who actually work for Anthropic and OpenAI, etc. that resign and tell us these things know less than fightin tigers does. It’s advertising 100% of the time

If concerned, why doesn’t he just stay and sabotage it from the inside?

Id say that the company has a long long track record of doing exactly this.

I'm currently reading a post apocalyptic book series where AI gaslit the world leaders into starting nuclear war

Aliens would step in and prevent that from happening, just like they watch over nuclear sites to ensure nothing crazy happens

Saw one guy being interviewed this morning he said. "one AI machine/system while doing what it was asked to do also set up a Bitcoin mining operation unbeknownst to the developers" if that's true that is mind blowing

Some thoughts, welcoming feedback:

1. If the frontier labs feel obligated to build something they think is dangerous because China is going to build it anyway, we'd better be really sure that China is going to build it anyway. Like, really, really, really sure.

Are we? Are we actually sure? The CCP wants to build an out-of-control, recursively self-improving model bc its neurotically, control-obsessed government thinks this is a policy worth pursing? We're 100% sure about that?

2. At the very least, we know that Chinese models distill American models to keep up with the frontier. So, any slowdown by the US seems like it would mechanically and automatically slow the ability of China to distill its way to progress. If we're afraid of the rate of progress, isn't that a good thing?

Out of all the time to be alive, we here to witness the rise of the machines.

Born 100-years earlier and you might not have ever left the county you were born in, and if you did, it would be to get gassed in a trench in WW1.

Now we got the liberty to get hit with a US taxpayer funded bioweapon in the comfort of our own home, or some other Black Mirror level shite.

So we all got that going for us, which is nice.
