I think it teaches a bad example of how to live within your means.
Makes sense because I see grown arse men sacrifice their career/future (retirement and pension) because little Haylee or Braxton needs to be at some event.
I was in competition sports as a kid and missed a lot of events because “we don’t have the money… or “your dad has to work”
It’s rare to see that now and I only assume it’s because the parents are making decisions they are angry at their parents for not making.

Fine with it if it’s a raffle, selling something, offering a service or gambling….now the monthly squares asking for money or asking for donations…frick off with that. I have 2 in travel sports and we are very outspoken that we will only participate in certain fund raisers and don’t believe in doing it unless we are going to a big World Series.
At same time I do feel it’s a way for those that other wise would not be able to afford it to play to have an opportunity to play in HS.
But overal..pay for your own damn kid.

The best (most profitable) money raising schemes I see now are gun raffles.
A $20 ticket gets you a chance to win one of several guns. Guys at work eat that shite up.

I don't care. Let them fundraise all they want.
I don't have to donate.
I don't have to donate.

I hate fundraising… son is 14, been playing travel ball, aau, etc….
It’s usually optional for us, and we don’t participate. We will do a jambalaya sale once per year, but I’m ok with that bc it’s not begging…
However- I would love to find a big wig donor , etc to help …. Hear me out… he got asked to play for a pretty big time AAU team… tourneys in Chicago, Phoenix, Nashville. Miami, Indianapolis….
All expenses paid for the player…. But parents have to pay to travel….and yes I understand, “can’t afford , don’t play”
But then my son loses opportunity, exposure, etc. this isn’t local aau tourneys… this is where you go to be seen…
So idk…

New deal called vertical raise
My son’s HS does this. It’s to pay for things the school doesn’t cover.
quote:
the service takes 20% off the top
Also asks you to “tip” Vertical Raise. This is the most ridiculous part of it all. You can zero it out though.
quote:
they have the kids submit 20 emails each
You know they don’t have to correct? You can say no, and enter them in the system after (or not).
VR makes it easy to request donations. My son hates asking for money without a tangible product. I personally would rather donate the full amount of cash to someone without getting something in return.

If he's good enough, he will get offers. PUMA/Nike is probably the most expensive aau stuff. I've been to some aau tournaments where they charge you $30+ for parking and $50/person just to get in.
Instead of doing AAU try doing some college showcases.

Primary issue is that public schools districts are no longer providing atheltic budgets from the parish/county as they've done since "always".
The gate entry has gone up for students & fans to nearly $10/game.
Expenses are through the roof. Team busses, uniforms, game refs, etc. just costs so much more than 10/20/40 years ago.

We always offered something. Car wash, bbq lunches, raffle, etc.
I could honestly support something like that

Both my boys play school football 7th and 12th grade. They now want us to sell discount cards to crap knowone wants or $ 500 a piece. That’s a $1000 dollars to play school sports. How about quit giving them backpacks, hoodies, caps, and endless supplies of sport shirts. My kids don’t need all that crap every year!

I think most parents generally hate fundraising. It’s the organizations that tend to be the ones pushing it the majority of the time.

If you want to give your money to something that benefits innocent people in the long run, it’s a pretty good option.

I will typically give for Little League or a public high or middle school team even if I just barely know the kid. If it’s club sports or private school, it better be a close blood relative.
That’s a weird take. Public schools have way more money operating money than private schools.

My son’s Junior high football team was required to do it. You had to give up 25 contacts. I hated doing that. Then I had to have 25 conversations asking if this was a real or scam text

The discount card was our second fundraiser. It at least had some good deals on it

I'm getting automated text and emails from high school kids, asking for money, to assist with their respective high school athletic teams. That's a first for me
Same here, for nephew’s wrestling team. Group of 4 boys in something called the NIL Club. I texted a parent asking for information and never heard back.

Say no? The kids asking aren’t the problem. If you like the sport/organization… support it. Understand that like everything, like 6 families are doing the work while 84 sit on their arse.
In Scouts we just asked parents their preference. Sell popcorn or pay more in dues and pay for each outing they attend.
They chose the latter.

True, but public schools have a federal requirement to provide services for things like dyslexia, severe autism, etc. which is where much of that operating budget goes. I was at an event at my son’s public middle school in Texas last year, and there was a kid so mentally handicapped there that he required a full time aide to follow him around. Private schools just won’t admit that kid. Not saying that there isn’t a ton of waste at the public schools because I’m sure there is, but it’s apples and oranges.
In the end, I will give money to the organizations that are truly open to everyone. There are a lot of driven, athletic kids out there who can’t afford private school or select ball. I hate the idea of a kid getting priced out of sports. Athletics should be open to everyone with the ability to compete.
