Thinking about taking the wife and kids this weekend. I haven’t been to a Ren Fest since I was a kid at the one outside of Houston.

Anything we should know before going? Anything we should either make it a point to see, or better yet, avoid?

Love going. We dress up. Bring lots of money—especially for mead and turkey legs.

its fun.

My favorite are the comedy shows (some adult only) and the birds of prey exhibit. Kids have a great time too.

It's way better than you'd expect for a Renaissance Festival in Hammond.

It's kind of like an LSU game.

You're surrounded by weirdos but if you try just a little bit, you'll have an awesome time.

I love it. As long as you don't go expecting a super detailed true to history ren fest. The shows are fun. Food is not bad in most places. Root beer is amazing. They have a lot of vendors selling there. Joust is entertaining and the birds of prey show gets a big crowd too. Lots of funny shows too

Bring cash

I went once and had a blast. Bring plenty cash and go in a good mood. I went during a Saints game and it wasn’t crowded.

I’ve been to the huge Texas REN Fest twice and it’s massive but crowded, almost too much. The Hammond one is nice esp with kids.

i live right around the corner, we go every year multiple weekends.

your kids will have a blast
bring cash
make a lap around the pond first and get the lay of the land, check performance times of stuff you want to see, etc.
you can get very drunk without much effort
weather should be perfect

dont miss:
paolo garbonzo
jousting
sword swallower
washing wenches
bagpipes
belly dancers

get turkey legs, jester chips, scotch eggs, etc whatever looks good...the food is way better than it needs to be

It's a blast. Like others have said, the jousting and the birds of prey shows are great. Also the guy who mocks you while you try to hit him with tomatoes

others have covered the basics already.

agree the joust, birds of prey, and glass blower are all standard stuff and fun to watch. good shops.

its on the small side to other festivals but still lot of fun.

pay attention to the weather. if it rained few days before you go. anticipate some muddiness and dress appropriately.

oh, and definitely if you want to enjoy a turkey leg, bring some flossers lol. i hate walking around rest of the day with turkey chunks wedged between my teeth,

Should I bring silver pennys?

Do they accept groats? Or should I bring half-groats?

no it isn’t
parking is in a huge grass lot, right next to the grounds. And it’s free. You don’t know what you are talking about
