I look at it differently. I’m happy to pay $50 for the airports to handle my luggage rather than me doing it myself. And I’m happier to pay them if I have connecting flights.

What is the rush to exit the plane immediately when it lands?
I understand if you have a quick connection flight, but other than that, sit your butt in your seat and let the people in the front of you exit in peace.
It’s the people from the back who are pushing forward that cause the problem.

This is my biggest gripe about carry ons.
They say a book bag counts a personal item, so naturally people get one suitable for taking on the Appalachian Trail for month and pack it to the gills.
Then they get a duffle back that could fit a baby elephant in it and call that their carry on.
Meanwhile, I have my laptop bag and a small duffle bag that can fit under the seat.
So yeah, start charging for carry ons or enforce the size limits. Charge a penalty for the oversized carry ons.

Great idea. Just charge for carry on bag except for 1 small personal one. No charge for checked.

Carryon is less expensive for the airline. The airline has to hire more employees in order for you to check your baggage onto the plane.

It's all about weight.
The more a plane weighs, the more fuel it burns. The more fuel it burns, the more fuel has to be pumped into the tanks. The fuel itself adds weight, so more fuel to carry also means more fuel to bear that extra load. All of this weight also means extra wear and tear on the aircraft itself.
Checked bags are heavy; carryons are (theoretically) light. Hence the economic model.
What the airlines should do - and this will never happen - is charge passengers based on how much THEY weigh. It cost an airline 3x as much to transport a fatass as it does some 85lb grandmother. Or they could revert to a simple cargo model where you are charged based on the total weight of all baggage. Also, wont happen.
So we basically have an insurance pool model where every passenger pays a share of the average cost to transport a person and their baggage.
