Video games are so mainstream it is like watching TV or movies...except it is not passive, it is active.

What is wrong with that. Would you be mad your kid wants to compete in chess? Some games are as competitive as chess.

5 bucks says most of these “cases” are decent kids that have a hobby. But some parents are fricking idiots

I would smash the fricking console with a sledgehammer while my kid was playing it.

The look on his face alone would make it worth it.

Wrong. I saw it for sale for like sixty bucks at Walmart.

Like most things in life, the issues surrounding Fortnite's pull are complicated.

No it's not. The kids need something else productive to focus on. It's simply another vice, and self control goes a long way.

While I believe parents need to do whatever it takes so their kids aren't playing 12 hours a day, including throwing the game and console in the trash

Boom.

Sometimes parents and their children need a little professional help to solve their problems. And that's never wrong.

That is incredibly wrong. Excessive professional help results in some level of over-drugging, on a societal level. Although yes, it's always true that SOMETIMES people need professional help. Cheeky slight of words.

Nowadays, I see parents who are distressed about what to do and are damn near appalled when I say they should maybe take their phone away or their video game/internet access away for a bit. It's bizarre.

Because that would be firing the babysitter

Best decision we ever made when our kids were born was to not have TVs.

The game is FREE. What you saw included DLC, which costs money. You could spend well over $60 on Fortnite if you wanted to. Anyone can play the game free though.

Also because parents don't know how to discipline the fit the kids throw when they take the phone or video game away. Little Johnny is in control.

Rehab?

Um, I don't need rehab for a kid. I know where the plug is. I bought the controllers. If they were playing it on a computer, I bought that too.

Good Lord when did parents become so pathetic?

When you speak in absolutes, you should try being absolutely right.
The addictive battle royale experience is 100% free to play on every platform.

Gaming can be addictive and I know people who failed out of college because they spent way too much time gaming rather than going to class.

Part of it is pulling them away from it for a while. After a week or two cold turkey they wonder “Why was I playing WOW/Battlefront/whatever so much?”

They may go back to gaming a bit but typically not to the “doesn’t leave the house except for food and work : class” levels anymore.

Also, IMHO, part of it is people trying to compete at an elite level, which tends to take a lot of money and/or up time.

The problem is that most elite guilds / teams / whatever have a high burnout rate because playing so much eventually drives people away.
