Parents old traditional top freezer Kenmore has been steadily cooling less and less over the past week. This morning I was over for breakfast and took a look at it.

Compressor running, freon gurgling.

Condenser coils (back of fridge) clean.

Freezer coils free from ice sans a small amount where line starts flowing. Rest of coil wont even get frosty.

They shopping for a new refrigerator right?

they're probably paying more in increased power usage over six months from that dinosaur than a brand new state of the art fridge costs

I had a similar issue with an older fridge.

Freezer was cold, but not freezing and the main fridge was cool but not cold.

Salmonella heaven.

Yep. Can buy a new top freezer fridge like that for well under $1000 anyway.

Buy a new one, it breaks in a few years, rinse wash repeat.

When my grandmother passed she had a 30 year old puke yellow fridge in perfect condition. I still kick myself for getting rid of it. We still have her old pea green washer/dryer combo. Only thing on them that breaks is belts.

It wasn't THAT old. Maybe 15years or little more. Been a great simple fridge for them. I seriously doubt the next one will live as long as this one.

I bought a brand new state of the art Samsung refrigerator 5 years ago and the damn thing has broken down 4 times. Fix the old one if you can. The new stuff is all crap.

This is true of almost every appliance nowadays.

The exception is the Speed Queen washer and dryer.

Yep. I had a top of the line Samsung go to shite in less than a year. Luckily it was under warranty and they reimbursed the purchase price.

Fix the old one.

Lowes has their appliances on sale through the 18th, highly recommend Whirlpool. They are on sale for $529-$899, depending on the cf needed.

The Whirlpool freezer on top models have been made for many years.

Edit your title with “Napoleon requested” or something so he’s sure to see it

ya, the freon leaked out and the freon it used back then, if you can even find it, would cost more for just the freon then buying a used refrigerator (well over $100) then the labor for the service guy is another $100+ more

sad thing is new ones dont last for shite so clue them in, that just like with any other new appliance you buy today, it will last maybe 5 years tops, 10 if you are really really lucky at best

I have a Kenmore just like that. Is the top freezer frozen up with ice? Mine was and was causing an issue with letting cold air get to the bottom.

wonder how it leaked out. I mean, from a leak obviously. But in addition to refilling the guy would also have to find and fix the leak. Honestly spending 300 to get it fixed doesn't sound terrible if it can be fixed soundly. They are quite happy with it and have yet to find themselves needing a touchscreen on their refrigerator door.

I am hoping Napoleon sees this but I doubt his answer will surprise me.
