Crazy, right.
People who never left think Louisiana is the best state with the best City in the world.
Those who left see a different perspective and are labeled as "traitors".
Very polarizing.

You seem kinda insecure about your decision TBH
I have no idea why you feel the need to make up arguments otherwise

This thread gets made almost nearly quarterly for the last several years the same responses are made from both sides.

Zero insecurity at all, and no regrets with my decision. I'm not creating anything, just simply stating what has been said here for years.
Again, to each their own.

yeah very few people, if ever, claim that LA is the greatest state

your posts say otherwise, but ok

quote:This is a bad take. Most of us see the flaws, but think the benefits outweigh them. For example, for my wife and I, we would have zero benefit moving to somewhere like Texas, but we would definitely have drawbacks. So, while overall for most people it may be better to live in Texas over Louisiana, that doesn't apply to everyone (people have unique situations).

you acted like it was child abuse to raise your kids in LA earlier, but ok
Some people are OK with raising a family in an area that is at/near the bottom statistically in nearly every category, some are not.
Never said it was child abuse, now you are making false claims.

i do think its funny you have a large contingenet on both sides that scream to high heaven.
Louisiana isnt nearly as bad as people make it out to be. In fact i would put parts of laffeyette up against almost anything suburban wise. LC was getting there before the storm, now its shite.
I also think a big part of this is economic and having families. Many of us do very well financially in LA and look at things different, same with those of us with families.
in general those that do well in LA and live near family enjoy it. But the Op is correct about LC right now. Will it get better? yes, so long as another storm doesnt hit. In 5 years LC will be back but that is a long time to wait. and if anther storm hits within 10 years....well tons will leave and not come back.
But in general you have natural disasters all along the gulf coast and across the country period. Are they as bad as Laura...frick no but neither are 99.99% of hurricanes.
Florida gets hit, including the tampa area, and if its a storm like Laura....you will have much of the same problems. LC's problems are compounded by covid too and the economy in general.
I 100% support the OP in the reasons he wants to leave. I also see why people love other areas. I love the burbs in most of the texas cities, florida and plenty of other places. I also see why many like myself choice to stay. Like you said, its almost like each situation is unique based on economic opportunities for that individual family and what they priortize.

I guess I got tired of hearing it every timeI came home.
I love Louisiana.. born, raised, attended college and started my career here. I get it. It's just sad as a whole what it is, and what could be.

my first born will be here in August and I want him to experience a good life and not have to live in such a miserable place
I have lived in BR for over 40 yrs and had a great childhood and life. Of course there are bad places in the city as there are in any city. I would think any place you choose to move to you will need to research the bad areas to avoid...I know where to avoid

starting all over with no family/friends/job is what prevents most people from making a move...works great for some and bad for others. good luck!

Just be conscious of the city that you are contemplating to go. Tampa is nice, but here in South FL it has become ridiculously expensive. It is nice and all, weather is great and the beach is close. However, a 3/2 townhouse are in the $350-380K range and a 3/3 single family home at $500K in decent condition. Many people are leaving here b/c of this while New Yorkers are coming down.

Life if what you make of it. You can be happy almost anywhere. And you can be a miserable prick almost anywhere.
My wife and I have spent a lot of time developing our career, which pushed us to relocate a few times as we progressed. That took us from New Orleans/Baton Rouge to Memphis to Pittsburgh to Chicago.
The OT criticizes those cities constantly and I think unfairly. I ended up loving Memphis, Baton Rouge, and Chicago. Certainly far more than I liked Pittsburgh, which so many on this board seem to like for some reason.
Moving back to Baton Rouge next year to build our forever house. My wife's attending position starts in July 2022, and they are paying her way more than she could get in Chicago. I will be working from home most of the time, and flying out to clients as needed. My daughter will grow up near her grand parents and cousins and go to the same school every generation of her family has gone to for 100 years.
And you are spot on that Louisiana has so much unmet potential. The food, people, entertainment, and outdoor recreation are really hard to beat in Louisiana. Unfortunately so many are drawn away from the state because there just aren't enough jobs for skilled and educated workers. I sincerely think that the state would progress RAPIDLY if they ever invested in their infrastructure (transportation and drainage), improved some more school districts, and shoveled cash into their top 3 universities.

Lafayette is a gem IMO. It would be a real juggernaut today had the 1980s oil crush not been so severe.
I don't spend as much time in Lake Charles as I'd like. It's gone through hell and back over the last year so I'm not going to criticize how it looks or feels right now. In my opinion, it's going to recover from the storms quickly. It's one of the few smaller towns in the deep south where the middle class job market is not only growing, but booming.

Maybe not but your comments are condescending af. It’s like we’re all terrible people for wanting to be around loved ones.
Maybe our loved ones don’t have to means to visit a place 14 hours away once a month. Maybe there are other circumstances.
Nobody needs to hear “youre soooo stupid for staying.” I have the means to get up and go but I choose not to because I love my family and leaving them would be the hardest decision of my life. It’s plagued me my entire life, matter of fact.
You do you but there’s no need to be a complete prick about it. Which you are doing.

We did it when my second boy was 1. Wanted a better life than what BR could offer. Picked up and left everything and everyone we knew to move to Charlotte. That was in 2019 and could t be happier with the move. You will not regret it.

Don't think that living to that area will not have any strings attached...
