They were ok with him face-to-face, but after he left one or both decided to get in a huff about it and let their anger build. That's got nothing to do with their religion.
He shouldn't talk to his boss about this. Let the parents have some time to depressurize. If she approaches his boss in the meantime, she looks like a loon.

I think it is pretty simple.
He needs to tell his mistress to handle her parents.
