J.R. Richards, the former lead singer of Dishwalla ("Counting Blue Cars"), which was an underrated band, is almost 60. His voice is fantastic. Of course, he had Italian opera voice training and works hard to preserve his voice. He's played at my house and I've seen a number of his shows. Everyone always goes "damn, that guy still has it." He plays a set of ten songs - preserves the voice. At the house, we spend more time shooting the shite than listening to the music.

Going to Styx and Chicago in The Woodlands in August. Saw Chicago a month ago, Lee Loughnane is the only original still touring. Still great music and show. Singer Neil Donnel just left them and the new guy is fairly young.

Charlie always had class.
Case in point is the classic tale from the 1980s: When a drunken obnoxious Mick Jagger called his hotel room at an ungodly hour and asked "Where's my drummer?", Charlie got out of bed, showered, shaved, and put on a suit just to go downstairs and punch his band mate's lights out.
As for DLR, he needed to quit BEFORE the last Van Halen reunion tour. He couldn't sing or remember the lyrics then. Everything was turned up louder than normal to cover up his inadequacies. It was so bad that I left early.
After Eddie died, he made a retirement announcement. I guess the money ran out because he's back for more...

In 1984 you were a wealthy rockstar if you made a million bucks after touring nonstop for a few years.
Since maybe 10 years ago a rockstar could make a million bucks in a weekend of shows in a major city.
And you have to figure not all of these guys were piling cash into IRAs back in the day.
And any disagreements you may have had with band members 30 years ago probably seems petty when you can make a few millions playing a guitar (with a backup guitarist) for a few hours together.

Being a drummer myself, that's my favorite Charlie Watts story. Our lead sing singer would introduce me, to people as "his drummer" I would laugh and say, "I'm not his drummer, I do play drums in the band" "he's our singer"

Worst concert I've been to, they had Eddie's guitar so loud, it pretty much drowned out everything. And DLR was beyond terrible....
Thing is, DLR was an entertainer, he lost that schtick as he got older, and his voice no longer carried him.

I’m still mad I missed him a few years ago. I was flying into Orlando and he was playing at the hard rock in CityWalk. Flight got delayed and I couldn’t make it on time.

some of the old farts can still put on a quality show but a lot of them, sadly, are just going through the motions, haven't seen them in a few years but one of the best live performances you could see, from one of the most underrated bands in the history of rock and roll, was the Doobie Brothers

It was. Likely because it was one of the funniest, most entertaining shows ever produced.

Pathetic, Washed-Up Rock Star On Fifth Decade Of Doing Exactly What He Always Wanted

DETROIT—Peter Wolf, a pitiful, has-been rock musician who hasn’t had a platinum record since 1981, has now spent more than 40 happy years doing exactly what he always wanted, reports confirmed this week. “It’s so sad to see that guy still out on tour after all this time,” a source said of the washed-up loser who has been able to walk out on a stage multiple nights a week for more than four decades and play music of his own creation while being cheered on enthusiastically by a paying audience. “When was that guy’s last hit anyway? Thirty years ago? God, it’s embarrassing.” At press time, the fans in attendance at the pathetic old artist’s latest show were reportedly singing along, word for word, with a song millions of people know by heart.

People still buy tickets for shite geriatric performers
People still buy tickets to these old acts that have fallen off because they want to go feel like they're 18 again for a couple hours.
Acts like David Lee Roth in his current form aren't selling a musical performance. They're selling nostalgia.

Local radio station rep usually gives me tickets to whatever is playing at the Amp (Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater in downtown Tuscaloosa).
A while back REO Speedwagon and Kansas was playing. A dude from Kansas came out using a walker.
I was like dude, just retire, sit somewhere and watch the clouds go by.

Just saw him a month or so ago. It was a fun show and his female guitarist was attractive and could wail.
