Of the ten states with the highest COVID-19 death rate per 100,000 residents, 9 of 10 are run by Democrats and have employed the harshest stay at home restrictions.

I’m a conservative who never votes for democrats, but this is stupid. OF COURSE the states with the worst COVID experiences are run by democrats. Democrats are strong in cities, and cities are dense, leading to high reproductive rates of viruses. States with populations largely in cities will A) tend to have high COVID issues and B) tend to elect democrats.

At the time, Italy’s health care system was overrun with COVID-19 patients. But that never came close to happening in Louisiana. The state’s hospital bed capacity sits at approximately 22,000. The virus at its peak hospitalized 2,199 COVID-19 patients. As of Wednesday, there were 931 coronavirus patients in the hospital in Louisiana. Nationally, fewer than 20% of COVID-19 hospitalizations require ICU beds. Louisiana has 1,500 ICU beds.

This overlooks the fact that under normal conditions 70-80% of hospital and ICU beds are occupied at a given time.

People die - it is a fact of life.

That really sums it up. People are woefully naive and isolated normally from the death rate. It’s not constantly thrown in your face that X people died yesterday. Apparently some people have trouble dealing with mortality.

Younger people never should have been forced to lock down / stay at home.

Texas, Georgia and Florida don’t have large metro areas with dense populations?

Miami
Tampa
Orlando
Atlanta
Houston
Dallas
Austin
San Antonio

I could go on and on

The states that are suffering the most allowed their nursing homes to be ravaged with the virus. Now that they are properly protecting those areas (for the most part) the spread and deaths are down. This trend will continue

Nah. A few colleges may do that, but regular school will happen for the rest

Wife has already been told to prepare for either starting the school year at home or part time (2 days a week at school, the rest at home). These kids are getting life experiences taken away from them because of fear from something no one even knows if it truly exists.

Congratulations, you’re quoting an idiot.

He may or may not be an idiot - I don’t know him. To be clear, I “quoted” the statistics he presented in his piece. If anything he presented is incorrect the please provide proof.

I don’t understand how intelligent people cannot look back and determine what was done wrong and what was done right.

Louisiana has nearly 40,000 cases...do you honestly not believe it was necessary to put some measures in place?

exactly.
4 of those listed are among the top 10 most populated metro areas in the country.

this is what i don’t understand about the “lock everything down” group.

do y’all honestly think the only two options are

A. Shut down the entire fricking state no matter what for X amount of time.
B. do absolutely nothing. frick it.

Because i’m pretty sure there a metric shite-ton of options that fall somewhere in between those two.

Given the unknowns at the time (Feb/March), I think steps should have been taken. If given a do-over, then shutting down hot-spots (I.e NOLA) and not the entire state seems to be more practical. Ordering shelter in-place for the most vulnerable would have also been more logical..but again, there were a lot of unknowns at the time.

My issue is when the facts started to present themselves we remained in lock down and are still in phase 1.

I thing the final lesson of this is that approach had little effect on the virus. I think super dense populations and mass events (like Mardi Gras) caused problems, but overall the shutdowns did little.

Here's a tidbit

quote:

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5.1 million people live in nursing homes or residential care facilities, representing 1.6% of the U.S. population. And yet residents in such facilities account for 42 percent of all deaths from COVID-19, for states that report such statistics.

DRaconian shutdwns were lazy political solutions. So were blanket policies.
