I am thinking the superheated part kills you before the suffocation part.

I wonder how effective those yellow hard hats the tour companies made their customers wear turned out to be.
About like this...

About 25 years ago I went to visit my grand parents in Auckland and Mt grandfather was all up in my cousin's shite about going out to White Island. It was the one time I saw him really mad.
He said " you do know it is an active volcano and it blows without warning? If you want to kill yourself, there are faster ways." My cousin was a thrill seeker, but the seriousness in how my grandfather said this left an indelible mark. Of course there was a lot more expletives involved. Many of the locals on that side of the North Island actively stay away.

Is this really that much worse then say Yellowstone? In hind sight these people look like idiots, but it sounds like there have been tourists there for many years.

Looking at the photos of those missing, why the hell has Orthodontics not caught on in Europe and other areas of the world like apparently Australia? I'm not saying people should have perfect teeth, but dang how can they not want something a little better?

Yellowstone is a supervolcano. People know the size of its subterranean igneous mass and moniter the tilt of the land above it. It doesn't have the 'water' factor built in (subduction zone).
White Mountain hasn't had the intensive study and is above a subduction zone. Water from the ocean gets into the lava and it becomes hideously explosive.
How a pyroclastic flow kills you talks about the different kinds of fast moving flows. (And how much warning some people won't have)

Was in Iceland earlier this year. I saw a few young people mostly working in stores and restaurants who had braces. It may be catching on a little bit.
You know once your parents have invested in your braces, you will be obligated no matter what to invest in braces for your kids and maybe grandkids.

Well it's going to burn your lungs and flesh yes. So it's kind of a race.

Bring a light jacket. Even though it is summer the evenings can be quit cool if you catch a SW wind which is not uncommon.
If you like wine and stuff like that you have lots of options close by. Matakana is great it is about an hour north of town....next to the highlamds outside of Christchurch it is one of my favorite places. Wine, produce good food , you will feel as though you are in NorCal. Waiheke is great too. Great views and vineyards....lots of wine in the area.
I forgot the name of the place but it is real high and you get strapped in a harness and dangle out there You can also climb the bridge.
Good beaches on the west side . Great views from Mt. Wellington...many memorable moments there as a teenager with my cousins.
If you like outdoor stuff the North Island is a playland this time of year.If you go in June it is the South Island with pretty good skiing.

Some of the famous Vesuvian victims in Herculaneum were found with their skulls blown apart. It appears that the heat of the surge was so extreme that their brains boiled, releasing trapped gases so quickly that it blew apart their heads

Hard for me to generate sympathy on this one.
