Reminds me of a national geographic article I read many years ago about people climbing Mt St Helen's when it was smoking. the they wanted a closer look. rip to many of them

Tourists have been travelling to White Island for years despite warnings from scientists that it could erupt at any time.
Between 2011 and 2016 the volcano to the north of New Zealand's north island - which erupted on Monday - had a period of increased activity but still boatloads of tourists arrived.
Volcanologists at the time refused to step foot on the island because it was too dangerous and warned tourists not to go - but still the boats kept landing.
In recent weeks the volcano has been going through another period of activity but tourism was not stopped.
Evidently there were signs but they say it’s a private owned island. So the government can’t stop the tour companies from going there.

Here's the latest:
- 50 people were on the island at the time
- 18 injured, some with severe burns
And out of that, how many will sue?

Not sure which county has jurisdiction on this, but I'd say there was likely a release signed. Further Assumption of Risk would be a defense.

We aren’t in the USA, so likely 0.

Ohh.. oh frick
32 people killed IN a volcano.
This picture is surreal. Taken by a web cam set up 1 min before eruption.

I hope the end was quick for those people.

I don't think they know how many people were even there yet.
Guardian live link
27 dead maybe unless they aren't counting the initial 5 as stranded.
Horrible way to go with superheated gas suffocating you.

If it's hot and smoky, you've been warned.

Three videos at this link
LINK
The tourists waiting right next to the water to evacuate and some before and after shots of the island had normal rock colors before and the ash drop changed everything to white. All of a sudden, you wonder it it was called White Island because of the steam coming out of the crater or because of the ash clouds.
If I read this correctly, evacuations were done by tour operators, first responders didn't respond because of too much danger and the helicopters could go out and look but not land because the ash could destroy their engines.

Maybe someone escaped but will let themselves be missing and assumed dead so they can start a new life.
Perfect opportunity.
Perfect opportunity.

New Zealand's prime minister is smashable.

The only silver lining is that those people inside the volcano were dead before they even knew what happened
