I had been tapering off and losing interest, but not avoiding it until the Saints Rams game in 2018 then it confirmed to me that it was all just WWE in another sport and looking back, it probably always has been
It’s really hard to believe they still allow gambling on it because it is so contrived.
And then the BLM stuff started and they all called me a racist cause I’m an old white guy and I really lost interest. It’s really meaningless to me now.

I wish I was still passionate like I was 15 years ago. I can still get into it if one of my teams is in a big game. I think it’s healthy to have the ability to let those emotions out.
That said…between NIL, rising salaries, politics, etc, it’s clear that these athletes do not truly represent my school or my team. As Seinfeld said, we are essentially rooting for laundry. Once you figure out that the powers that be in sports don’t give one shite about you or me, it’s easier to find something else to do on Sundays.
It’s trivial, but I miss the innocence of my youth, spent cheering on my college and pro teams, thinking that Game 7 of the 1997 World Series was the end of my life, and that my Spurs would never get past the Lakers, and that the Cowboys were supposed to be champions every year.

It's trivial. I find it to be a trivial thing to put money on, so I don't. It is merely an opportunity to turn my brain off, be passionate about something in the moment, and ride the roller coaster of emotions.

I've all but quit watching TV other than Andy Griffith, the local weather and a few football games. And I grew up loving TV. It's all unwatchable shite, imho. Not sure if it's a coincidence that I also have a nice lawn you can get off of, but still.

Not sure if the irony has hit home with anyone that this is a multi-page thread essentially asking the question, “Are we too interested in watching sports?”
If you are worried about that, then what the hell are you even doing posting here about it wasting more of your time (me included) on this “Triviality “?

It’s not ironic this is a message board about topics.
The OP is a topic that can be discussed.
Don’t be a try hard.

Related to that… I used to get upset when LSU or my team lost, especially to a hated rival, but now… after many decades… a single loss in any sport is absolutely meaningless. There’s always another day in sports.
This is my attitude.
I’ll have good days and bad days. I cheer for A&M, Rangers, Baylor, Cowboys, and the Spurs.
I am adjacent to and root for LSU, Michigan, Mavericks, Astros, VaTech, Saints, Knicks, etc.
One of my teams will win most days. Most will lose the others.
It has no bearing on my daily happiness outside of 3 hours.

I’ve found that you start pulling at the threads of whether something you care about is really meaningful, you can quickly descend into some uncomfortable nihilism. Void staring back and whatnot.

It was 2008 that I made a decision to not let LSU football dictate my mood. Before then, a loss would ruin my whole weekend and pretty much the whole next week. Then after 2003 and again after the crazy 2007 NC, I decided I could relax. It’s just a past time and not important.
And then Covid and BLM hit and that further withered my passion. I will never donate to LSU.

This is the OT. A board designed for idle musings.

Rather watch actual ballgames and some extended highlights of ballgames at home, but that’s about it. Enjoy getting out there occasionally, I do it less these days because they are straight robbing people blind.
Never get sucked into the sports shows, twitter personalities, and such. Tripe, all of it is pointless unless you are maybe betting games or being a fantasy football bozo who needs the info.
Worry for the folks who don’t come to realize the triviality as they grow older.

The NFL is as staged as pro wrestling is. Don’t waste your time watching it.

Also true. Many threads, including this one, will have posters that love to take care of their yard, fish and hunt, play video games, buy expensive watches, etc. Some of these people do those very things in lieu of watching sports. Fact is…none of that really matters either.
I could manicure my yard well, or just cut and trim it every two weeks. Either way, I’m still gonna die.

Lot of reasons to ignore the NFL but I’m still not sure about outcomes being scripted. Everyone would have to be in on the deception and I just don’t think it’s possible to achieve.

this. Covid/pay for play/watered down 12 team playoff. This isn't the sport I fell in love with as a child

I find watching games much more enjoyable after an edible. Even though the game Saturday was a complete shitshow, I was able to take my expectations out of the game and simply enjoy it.
The way people were going on you would think we got Troy'd again.

I told myself i was going to take a step back after the 2019 championship since we were lucky enough to win the championship with the best team in CFB history, so its never really going to get any better. But, i find myself getting just as invested every year still
its just something that i was raised in and will always be passionate about.
I did however, mostly quit going to away games after that year with the exception of Kentucky in 21. Decided my travel money was better spent experiencing places other than the south east every football season lol. Was in Spain for the bama game last year and wasnt worried about watching at all.

“Watching sports” and “watching talking heads at 7 am” are not the same thing

I'm just wondering if anyone else has suddenly started to find sports to be trivial and perhaps started watching less as a result.
100%. I don’t really watch American pro sports anymore. I certainly don’t have favorite teams I follow.
college athletics essentially being pro now has ruined it for me. I still follow A&M, but I’m not nearly as invested.
I do think some of this indifference can be attributed to getting older.
